Other information Band Profile
What is your name and your current position in the band? Pepe, guitar!
How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now? Thrash/death metal. I consider playing other styles, but not with this band...
What is your latest album and why should people buy it? Our latest album is called "To the nines" - out late March 2009. People should buy it simply because it is good, haha! I feel we have our own modern sound and different ideas that makes the music stand out. So therefore people, go buy it and check it out!!
Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today? The band springs from another band, Necrosis, that was formed in 1993 in a little Danish town called Odder. After releasing three demos the name was changed to HateSphere, and the first album was released in 2001. Since then the band has released seven more albums - five full lengths and two minialbums. Our biggest carreer highlights must be our trips to Japan and China... and our performances on the Danish Roskilde Festival (2 times) and Wacken Open Air (2 times as well).
Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?
Well yes, haha. In the beginning being a 14-year old boy simply playing cover songs by his favourite band, I had never imagined being where I am today. Having released so many albums, having toured so much and having met so many people fond of my music. So yes, I never thought this would happen, but I am very happy that it did!
Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band? Wacken Open Air 2007 - playing in the evening in front of around 15.000 people and kicking ass.
Midi Festiva, Beijing, China, 2007 - just the fact that were in China was amazing... but to play in front of like 20.000 people was incredible!
How is the writing process in the band? I write most of the music - play it with our other guitar player or our drummer, and then the rest of the band eventually joins us, and we arrange it all together. Sometimes though we have those magic moments, where stuff are being made directly in the rehearsal room - without any preparations...
What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music? I got inspired by another guy in my class playing guitar and listening to hard rock! After that I started taking lessons myself, and the rest is history, haha. Stories about my favourite bands like Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe in various magazines had a big impact on me as well, so I guess they made me wanna play even more! I have actually managed to get an education as a teacher beside the music...
Do you have any idols? If yes, who? Steve Clark (Def Leppard, R.I.P.) - he was the main reason for me ever playing guitar!!!
Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it? Hehe, no I havent regretted any albums! I am quite satisfied with what we have been doing. I guess, you sometimes look back and feel that you have moved on from something - but that is only natural. I am proud of the albums we have done so far.
Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself? I guess there are... but I wont mention them... in fear of getting the fans after me, haha ;-)
How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums? In the past the lyrical aspect hasnt been that important but that has changed on our new album! The lyrics and the vocal lines have been worked on really hard! What we aim for is always to make the lyrics fit the atmosphere of the music.
What do you think about the state of the music industry today? Well, I dont think that any musician is really satisfied with it... but I guess there werent any satisfied musicians 10 years ago either - and there never will be, hehe. I obviously dont like the fact that some music gets pushed more - simply because the style is more popular... in that way some very ordinary bands gets more publicity than more talented bands - and that of course gets on my nerves... but that is a money/business issue, and I dont think that much about it... I try to concentrate more on my own music!
What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy? Hmm, I really dont know... I myself am annoyed with seeing my own album being ripped from different download-sites!!
Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it? Be happy - eat candy!!
Can you describe a typical day in your life? That depends on if its a regular day - or a touring day! A regular day starts with a little bit of break fast, then work, then family... then tons of emails and then sleep!!!
What do you like to spend your time with besides music? Spending time with my girlfriend and son... and travelling!!!
What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour? Well, we have had a couple of van tours, where we have had to sit up and sleep - that has been pretty hard. So when people get drunk, strange things happen, hehe! People wake up under a boat trailer on a parking lot etc... typical stuff!
You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each) Albums: Def Leppard - Hysteria Pantera - Vulgar display of power Morgoth - Odium Movies: The omen This is Spinal Tap Books: The Dirt - Mötley Crüe Historical stuff Geographical stuff
What is your favourite joke? ..... I can never tell or remember a joke, when being asked for it...
Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band? We are releasing our new album, To the nines, on March 23rd. After that we have a massive European headliner tour coming up in April, before playing summer festivals around Europe. We are working hard on getting to the States and Asia as well, and actually we just want to play as much as possible and expand our fan base and spread the word. Furthermore we will most definately do another video for the album...
Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers. Thank you for the interview as well - it was a pleasure. Go check our webpages, www.hatesphere.com and www.myspace.com/hatesphere, and get updates on tour dates, merch, videos and more. Furthermore of course go buy our album when it's released, and we hope to see you on tour!!
Cheers Pepe/HateSphere
