Quireboys lead singer
Spike is back with a brand new solo album in the same vein as his previous effort "It's a treat to be Alive", which was completed in 2002 but released in 2007. "So Called Friends" is released on Jerkin' Crocus, which was the same label responsible for the recent Quireboys record.
The music is laid back bluesy Rock N' Roll with
Spike's hoarse and unique Jack Daniels dusted vocals as focal point. Once again Frankie Miller contributed to
Spike's albums. This time Miller penned 3 songs with the opening track
Cocaine as a standout track, since it has a great 50's gangster feel with brass.
Spike always sound in vocal top form and you cannot help tip your toe to this irresistible track
Spike uses his Quireboys colleagues Paul Guerin, Pip Mailing and Keith Weir on several tracks and they have a special chemistry, which makes a track like
It's a Shame groove and swing. Paul Guerin has co-written three tunes and his Gibson Les Paul suits the vibey
All Your Love is.
From the terrific opener
Cocaine to the emotional closer
So Called Friends Spike has provided all fans of Rock music with another great album. The music is rooted in the same Rock N' Roll alley as Quireboys but with a more laid back feel.
The album highlight is
Spike's own
She Reminds me of You. The chorus is amazing.
Spike sounds better than ever and with records like these it's certainly a treat to be alive.
