Sieges Even split up back in September 2008. Fortunately they managed to release this, their first live album ever. Since the 1980'ies the band has been through at least three incarnations, each having their own sound and level of heaviness and each with their unique take on musical brilliance. The album naturally focuses on the last two albums with their latest singer Arno Menses but also pulls out a couple of welcome songs from A Sense of Change, the "old album" which best reflects the current style of the band.
The sound is very good and each instrument is audible, something that is essential to make the complex soundscapes come alive. Personal highlights are a fantastic version of
Unbreakable,
Tidal where the harmonies really work and the two oldies,
The Waking Hours and
These Empty places. A few more older songs would have been a hit with me.
The performance is impressive with brilliant musicians ensuring a high technical level and Arno Menses ensuring a strong emotional and humorous impact. If you're a
Sieges Even fan there is without doubt much to enjoy here but if you want to discover the band I would go for
Sophisticated (One of the finest progressive metal albums ever),
The Art of navigating by the stars and
A sense of change instead, in that order.
This marks the end of another chapter in the
Sieges Even playbook, hopefully they will once upon a time return to write another one. My only regret is that I never made it to one of their concerts.
