Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

Ivano Spiga, I am the guitarplayer and founder of the band.

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

We play Classic Heavy Metal with lyrics about ancient warfare, both from Romans and Greeks. I like to play heavy metal since i was a little kid, i'm not interested in playing other music.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

It is called Hellenic Warrior Spirit. It is about the Battle of Thermopylae. If someone likes movies like 300 should check out our band!

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

I started to play and compose music in 1994...but only during 2000 i've found a good line up. We have done serious things only in this decade, we have made three self financed works and we have played outside our country. After the contract with our label Dragonheart in 2006 we were able to record finally albums, in a professional way. Without a contract it's very hard to stay again underground and hidden.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

Yes, we have found a good fanbase during the years but as i said in the previous question, only with a label you can do some projects, with a better promotion and a good studio to record the stuff. I always thought that we were making good things but in a smaller way, wasting our energy.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

The appearance at the Keep it true during 2004 and a show in Athens the same year. It was just awesome, we have played in front a lot of people just after two demos. I never imagined a so good reaction about our music.

How is the writing process in the band?

I write all, and everyone put some ideas with their experience on the instruments. I don't pretend to say to the drummer or the bass player how to play their parts, but i like to be a guide in the band.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

When i started to listen Iron Maiden and Heavy Metal in general...i thought that was great to compose and play my own music. But i always had a creative side, i like to paint and to write histories...maybe i've chosen the best way to use my creativity.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

Musically speaking...maybe Tony Iommi and Steve Harris. They have talent and they composed perfect music.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

I don't like so much our first album, the producer was the wrong person to produce Holy Martyr. I can hear a lot of imperfections and the sound really sucks. Many people like it, so i think it's good in a way or in another.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

Maybe warmonger and some songs from the first album...they sound too old, too distant from the band is now.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

One of the most important things. I always try to do something good, but English is not my own language. For Holy Martyr is very important to have lyrics that reflects the music and the riffs.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

It's not the best. It was better many years ago. Actually all is made to be trendy and to gain money, no time for the art, at least music is this: a form of art.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

To sell the cd's for a cheaper price...or better to use again the vinyl!

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Live like you'll die tomorrow, live like you'll be immortal.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

I work, sometimes i have ideas about new songs and when i'm back at home i try to record them, just to preserve them. When we must prepare some concerts i haven't time to do this, i just arrive at home and then we go to rehearse.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

Read, write...listen music.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

A girl in Germany started to touch my legs during the whole concert, it was incredible.

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Iron Maiden, The Number of the beast, Somewhere in time. Braveheart, Frankenstein Jr, Shining. The lord of the rings, Dune, Gates of fire.

What is your favourite joke?

I haven't a particularly joke.

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Nothing so special. To play more alive and to make new songs...

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

Thanks a lot to the people who support for a lot of time...hope that new ones will be curious about our music!
