To Wait for fire is the debut of the Cyprus based Diptheria (bad throat disease in medical terms), who have been around since 1993 and now finally have released their first album through Pitch Black Records.
Influences from Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Savatage,
Judas Priest among other metal gods are evident but not put to blasphemous use. An interesting blend of primarily old school Heavy Metal, doom and a little power metal makes up the gist of their sound. After opening with a fast and suitably heavy tune the album soon settles in a fitting midtempo groove and lets the atmosphere unfold.
Behind the mirrors eye, which begins in a very familiar Maiden fashion, is a personal favorite as is the dark and brooding
As darkness casts its veil.
Save me is a successfully slow and heavy piece while
I believe is the only song that falls short and fails to capture the right feel.
The band shines when they hit the right note of atmospheric doom-laden heaviness. Lead Vocalist Nicolas Leptos does a great job throughout and though his voice can sound frail at times it is part of its charm.
The last two songs are from the band's 1995 demo. Both are good and it's interesting to get a glimpse of where they started.
Living to die has a strong
Judas Priest inspiration once it gets going and the ultra melodic, half acoustic piano epic
God Wanted (Apply here) stands out as a fun little curiosity.
The album ages well and here, half a year after the first listen there is an instantly familiar atmosphere in the air when I put it on. To wait for fire is not earth scorchingly mindblowing, but the band shows a lot of potential and if they harness their best elements and inspiration into their next album they have potential to create something that is.
