Since 1994
Backyard Babies has delivered several solid albums in the cross path of punk, sleaze and Hard Rock. This self titled album follows the dirty same path.
The bouncy
Degenerated is the song that puts this album in gear. The album highlight is
Drool, which has a great catchy chorus and sleazy riffs from guitarist Dregen. "
I am Judas, but I like it and Jesus, but I doubt it" - Love everything about
Drool. Great rhythm, great song!
"
Backyard Babies" contains a handful of favorites including
Voodoo Love Bow - a kick ass rocker with sleazy guitars and a great bar piano. The song is rawer than some of the other rockers, but it has a great melody line.
Backyard Babies sure knows their workmanship with great riffs/chord progressions.
Idiots is a catchy song with a great guitar line, but unfortunately the chorus gets a bit too polished
The music of
Backyard Babies has lots of redeeming elements. However, some of their songs sound like nu-rock and that has always been the "problem" with
Backyard Babies - they are stuck somewhere between glam, sleaze and nu-punk. They band cannot be categorized as one of the aforementioned and gets stuck in the middle. Personally I search for more rawness since
Backyard Babies often plays it safe and polish their songs. The attitude is there but roughness is missing.
