Guitarist Pat McManus is best known for his work with Mama's Boys, which he formed with his brothers John and Tommy. Mama's Boys toured with all the big names and even scored a US hit with their cover version of Slade's Mama We're All Crazee Now.
Since Mama's Boys broke up Pat McManus continued to play with his brothers in the band Celtus, which blended Irish music with dance friendly beats. Hmmm - fear not! "In my own Time" is twelve tracks rooted in Blues Rock in the likes of Rory Gallagher. "In my Own Time" marks the first album from Pat, who in 2001 moved back to his home country Northern Ireland.
The first part of the album is splendid. The opener Got it Right is self saying. The song is based around a great blues lick and the first line goes "I Wasn't Born in Chicago", but sure blues runs in his blood despite being from Northern Ireland. Pat McManus sounds very inspired on the first handful of songs. Low Down Dirty Blues has an amazing solo and the instrumental Juggernaut is rooted in traditional Irish music, but the guitar playing is pure Joe Satriani.
Unfortunately the record looses pace and the freshness, which characterized the first batch of songs. Pat McManus gets more experimental. Despite the warm sounding blues ballad Fool there are several standards like Back in the Saddle, Say Goodbye and E-Mail Blues which all are ordinary blues takes, which has been recorded by a thousand other artists.
There are some very strong notes on this record. If you are into Blues Rock you definitely should check this out. Pat McManus has a special voice that certainly isn't for everybody.Written by
