Superstar guitarist Steve Stevens is back with his first solo album in nearly 8 years. Stevens is best known as Billy Idols' guitarist, but Hard Rock fans cannot overlook his contribution on Vince Neil's "Exposed", the Jerusalem Slim project with Michael Monroe and his own Steve Stevens Atomic Playboys.
"Memory Crash" is not like Stevens' recent fusion project nor his Flamenco guitar album - "Memory Crash" is a no frills and no compromising Steve Stevens electric guitar record.
The album mainly contains guitar instrumentals. The writing is intelligent and always based around great melody lines and even though Stevens is the master of guitar effects the melody is in focus. Stevens also brought in drummer Brian Tichy, who gives the record groove.
The remake of Robin Trower's Day of the Eagle features Doug Pinnick from King's X doing lead vocals. It's a great version and just proves that Stevens masters all styles of playing.
Hellcats Take The Highway is some of the best and entertaining guitar playing. I haven't been so enthusiastic about a guitar instrumental since Joe Satriani's track Surfing with the Alien.
The title track is entertaining and Small Arms fire is an interesting musical piece.
The highlight of "Memory Crash" is the progressive Prime Mover. The song makes you visualize a movie. It starts acoustic but transforms into a Pink Floyd alike instrumental and also features Stevens' toy raygun effect, which has become his trademark.
Stevens plays with passion. His tone and selection of notes makes "Memory Crash" a great album.
