Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

Kai Pasemann, Guitarist, Backing Vocals, Textwriter

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

Speedmetal.
I played Crossover-Metal in a band called "Declaration Of Dependence" and Reggae in "Toxic Avenger Band".

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

"Electrify" is a modern-sounding Speedmetal album with many fast parts, but also much melody and progressive ideas. Itīs very fresh and powerful !

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

The band was formed back in 1986 by Charly Steinhauer and Axel Blaha, I joined the band 1990. We have 4 records out, which were internationally highly acclaimed. At the same time this is our low point - we had too long breaks after Heresy - because the band broke up - and after Collision Course - because Charly got very sick.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

PARADOX went from one Demo-band to a worldwide Deal with Roadrunner back then.that was very quick. After that, only in the last years before Collision Course it seemed, we were "forgotten".

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

We just had a great weekend in Athens, were we played a show with totally freaking out greeks. It was amazing ! My greatest moment was, when Charly suddenly called me some time 1997 or 1998 and told me, weīre coming back.

How is the writing process in the band?

Charly Steinhauer composes all songs by himself and then I write some lyrics and we plan the vocal lines together. Mostly we have an idea of song-titles before music even starts to get composed - I already have an idea about the "concept" of the next album.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

I started playing flute with 4, then violin until 12, and then guitar, first classic, then electric. Besides that I am a lawyer.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

No specific idols, I used to try to play guitar like Eddy Van Halen and Gary Moore.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording?  If so, what made you regret it?

No, I like every album, even the Reggae-stuff, haha ! So the only regrets I have is that we are often unlucky, for example we had a european tour booked with Mekong Delta which now was canceled, because the guitarist had broke his arm.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

Well, some of our coolest songs, like Path Of Denial are pretty damn hard to play. Thatīs when we really have to concentrate on stage.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

I think - I am telling you this as the guy who is responsible for them - that they are not important to me as a fan of other bands / music. I like to write interesting lyrics, but nothing where "you have to make your own idea" - I donīt like this type of lyrics, because sometimes I have the impression the author is too lazy to write something concrete and to put out his point of view.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

More bands, more Products, more illegal downloaders - itīs getting harder, but everyone who wants to survive and does his part well, will survive.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

To sell legal music cheaper - itīs idiotic to pay as much money for a download as for a regular CD ! And to stop the fileshare networks, I donīt know how.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Work hard, drink hard.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Ringing at 6:45 a.m., wake up the boys, feed the cat, go to work - stress all day - come home, homework-check, bring kids to bed, interviews, sleep.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

Mainly I play tennis, read, watch movies and drink beer with my pals.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

In another band I played, we had this real old Ford-bus. We were on tour with Motorhead and the bus broke down 500 m from the concert hall. So the band just pushed the bus with equipment to the venue. Or was it, when the bassist exploded ?, no, it was when the drumkit caught fire !

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

CDs: Textures-Drawing Circles, Between The Buried And Me-Colours, Rush-Exit Stage Left

Books: 1 Dean Koontz, 1 Charles Bukowski, 1 Helge Schneider

Movies: Laurel And Hardy: Way Out West, Spaceballs, Life Of Brian

What is your favourite joke?

Canīt remember jokes, sorry.

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Play as many concerts as we can get and finish the new album faster than the last two ones !
