Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

I'm Marco Sfogli and I'm the guitar player!

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

It's pretty much an instrumental band. As a session player I play a lot of different styles, from pop to world-folk to fusion.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

My first solo record titled "There's Hope" is available on the market. I think people should buy it because isn't a typical shred record. Songs are more focused on the melody than on "how many notes you can put in a row"

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

My band was formed just recently, even tho I knew the band members already. Some of them were close friends, some I came across surfing the net...it's a matter of finding the right people you know, and it works for me. My personal highlight was recording for James Labrie of Dream Theater on his solo record titled "Elements of Persuasion" back in 2004. That call changed my life.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

I think this happen with any band and it's that good reason that push musicians (and bands) to improve. If nothing happens, well at the least you tried!

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

The very first time we played together. Last year. Very funny and exciting. We did like 3 rehearsals together and it was like if we played together for years! Definitely an awesome chemistry between us.

How is the writing process in the band?

Usually I take care of the songwriting.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

Probably the reason is that I live in a musical family. My parents play professionally and the choice to play for me was more than obvious. And to be honest I can't see myself doing anything else than playing.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

Guitar wise I have so many heroes that if I had to list everyone we won't finish anymore hahaha. But if I had to pick just one I would say Andy Timmons

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording?  If so, what made you regret it?

Fortunately no!

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

Not yet

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

It's a hard issue. Labels seems to be more focused on "how much can I get with this guy" than on the contents, the music. And that's why today's bands last shorter than the great bands of the 70's. It's all a matter of having maybe one, two huge hits and then disappear like nothing happened you know. Hopefully there are a few names that still hit the road because they have the balls and the tools to continue producing good music. But as far as the music industry goes I think it's time for a radical change...more quality and less bullshits!

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

Absolutely keeping the prices LOW. Even tho I think downloading is like a sort of drug for some people. Ya know, it's like having a pie right there at any time...all you have to do is stretch your arm and get your hands on it hahaha. But people who do that simply don't understand the harm of what they do. Small artists are very affected by the piracy, me included.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Not really.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

I wake up in the morning relatively late, around 10:30am. Get a coffee and check emails. Then I usually practice for a bit...lunch time and then in the afternoon usually I give private lessons, almost every day. On evening it depends from day to day. Sometimes I just watch movies, sometimes I get with my girlfriend.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

I don't have many hobbies you know. Maybe just using Internet and playing some Xbox stuff at some point!

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

There have been many...but someone will agree if I say when I blew out a brand new amp in London during the Labrie tour. I was checking out this amp at the store on a day off when all of a sudden the amp turned off and didn't work...fortunately no one was around. I simply left the guitar there and ran out the store like a thief, hahaha!

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Mmhh I would bring Sgt. Pepper's from Beatles, Isolation from Toto and Mercury Falling from Sting. Movies...What About Bob with Bill Murray, The Goonies and The Green Mile.

What is your favourite joke?

Calling my friends doing fake voices...sometimes they fall in the trap!!

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Playing as much as we can promoting my latest solo record. Doing more sessions and trying to pay the bills with this job!
