The latest
Spiders and Snakes album "Melodrama" was absolutely amazing. In 2005 "Melodrama's" predecessor "Hollywood Ghosts" was released.
"Hollywood Ghosts" is mellower and more laid back record. This could be explained by Timothy Jay and Lizzie Grey played as an acoustic duo around that time. The record mostly relies on 60´s and 70´s Rock.
The trademark of
Spiders and Snakes is the split vocals between Lizzie Grey and Timothy Jay. Grey/Jay sound like Lennon/McCartney on the irresistible
The Girl Can't Help it, which could have been on a Beatles album. Another earhanger is their cover version of Jim Stafford's
Spiders and Snakes.
Overall the album is a bit too mellow and songs like
Siamese Twin and
Bill's Cigar doesn't work. The band sounds best when they rock out with guitars dominating.
You do get value for money since there is a bonus DVD, which contains all
Spiders and Snakes' videos. You see the band transform from a full blown Hard rocking outfit, to a Glitter rock band and ending as an acoustic duo.
"Melodrama" got me hooked. If you hear the albums chronological maybe "Hollywood Ghosts" sounds more natural. However, I still have appetite for this recent discovery and have been collecting more
Spiders and Snakes albums with "London Daze" as newest addition. For any
Spiders and Snakes virgin I advise you to check out "Melodrama" first.
