In 2007
Winger embarked on a reunion tour taking them both to
Europe and through their home country USA. The tour was in support of their comeback record "IV", which was a disappointing album compared to the 3 previous studio albums.
The concert opens with
Blind Revolution Mad, which ranks among the best
Winger songs ever. The set-list is basically a greatest hits parade mixed with a few new tunes. All in all the "Pull" songs stand out as the best songs of
Winger. However, a song like
Loosen Up sounds lots more alive in concert compared to the studio version.
Rainbow in the Rose is another highlight along with
Madalaine.
Winger sounds good! Kip
Winger can almost sing in same key as on record. He sounds good throughout the whole show even on the high pitched
Madalaine and
Junkyard Dogs. The performance reaches a dead point half way through. The emphasis on the weaker new songs and 2 solos from Reb Beach plus Rod Morgenstein drags down the overall impression.
Winger finishes off with style, but the order of the setlist could have worked better in concert.
The DVD performance is filmed with 10 cameras and also includes
Hungry as the final encore. It was a big mistake that
Hungry was left off the CD since it's a rocking version. It could be a marketing issue as well, since the CD and DVD only are available separately. The bonus material is footage from soundcheck and a photo gallery. Nothing too exciting.
The filming of the DVD with multiple cameras and the performance from each individual are irreproachable. However,
Winger is not the most exciting band to watch on stage. They lack some chemistry and connection to the audience. Kip
Winger is glued to his mic stand and he also has to concentrate on the bass. You cannot question Kip
Winger´s musical abilities. He plays the 12 string acoustic guitar on
Who's the One flawless.
The show is filmed and recorded at Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana, Ca. It's a fan only release. I would still advise
Winger-virgins to get the studio albums before this one. Lately
Winger has catered their fans; a new album, a demo anthology and now a 2-live disc/DVD. The Demo Anthology was the most interesting with some new tunes that sounded great and almost all
Winger tunes in demo format.
Great musicianship combined with good songs - You can't go wrong with "Live" even though the original albums still are preferred.
