Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

I´m Michael and play the crazee drums

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

With Dreamscape it will always be Prog Metal, but all the members of the band are still able to play different styles of music as they are Jazz or Funk

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

Our last album is "5th Season" and the people should have the best Dreamscape album, they've ever heard

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

Dreamscape has been founded in 1986, the Name comes from the same title movie with Dennis Quaid. First it was only a project without doing any gigs, but after a while, especially, when Bernhard Huber and Jan Vacik join into the band, the quality of the songs and the live playing grew up to a professional level. The band recorded 5 CD´s in the now 20 years lasting history and played many live concerts. The Prog-Power Festivals in USA, UK and EU should be named here especially. From all changes in line up (5 CD´s - 4 different singers), the bands story is a continuously evolution to reach higher technical and arranging levels. We hope to go on like that, not changing line ups, but writing more good music. ;-)

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

These times still comes up in every musicians life. Well knowing, what a hell of blood, sweat and tears you´ve put into your work, you deserve wages for it.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

The moment we get the information about getting the tour with "Sieges Even" is surely one of the happiest moments in my life.
That´s were we wanted to be: On Stage!

How is the writing process in the band?

The songs are written by 5 different people with different mind and soul. That is a reason for itself to get the result proggy. After the brainstorming like collecting parts progress, we do very effective pre-production's, so that the songs are also in recording process have the time to grow. A part is only taken for the song, if everybody in the band agrees with it.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

I think I'm born to become a musician. I was 6, as I was able to play every children's song with my toy piano only by hearing the song once. Tried to learn guitar with 10 but my parents won't pay the lessons. In all my life, things happened which say to me: "make music!" what my parents won't accept, but due to all signs it has been impossible not to become a musician. Every person wants to be famous in that kind or another. My best way was to learn how to play the drums.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

I have a few musicians whom I adore to. Freddy Mercury is on top of the list. Buddy Rich as one of the most amazing drummer, Eddy and Alex Van Halen and for sure every musician on this planet who uses his talent as a gift from god.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

I regret absolutely nothing. Even in my most disappointing experiences I'm in the sure knowing, that people who've played a bad game with me will be finally punished by someone else.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

No

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

In the same rank as the music

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

The music industry should show more readiness to assume a risk all in all. The absolute main aproach is making as much money as they can with the lowest engagement which is desperate to do. Bad times for good music beside the main stream.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

Firstly making music easy to download for a good fair prize and secondly to make CD´s cheaper.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

We are all a part of creation. Let us respect each other and show, the we are value to live on this wonderful planet.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Getting up at 6.00 am. Have breakfast with my girl friend and/or children (Philipp, and Julian) went to music school for giving drum lessons from 11.30 am till 7.00 pm.
3 times a week I´ll go to rehearsals with Dreamscape and afterward I´ll have a glass of wine before I fall into a deep and peaceful sleep, till the madness starts again on the next day. ;-) I love it!!!

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

Almost with my beloved children and girlfriend.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

The craziest thing? Once I played a few gigs with Bonfire. On the first job I decided to take a new doublebass mashine, but some screws on the pedal has not been screwed strong enough. We start with a up tempo song with much double bassdrum parts in it and the machine broke up. Near beside me was the drum-tec. and I shout at him to give me the spare machine for the next song. He looked at me as if he can't count till 3 and went away for guitar tuning. Unbelievable, but funny after a few years distance.

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

CD´s: Queen- A Night At The Opera, "Master Of Puppets" of Metallica, one of the TOOL albums and music paper to write down the drum scores.

Movies: Lord of the Rings 1-3 or Star wars 4-6,

Books: The holy Bible, My Italian schoolbook, survivor lessons :-)

What is your favourite joke?

How many blues musicians does it take to change a lightbulb?
5! One to change it and the other 4 write a song how good the old one was.

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

We like to do a live DVD in the nearest future, write some good Prog music and be on stage as often as possible.

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

So for all of you reading these lines, bless you and hope you can do the things you like the most, as we try to do.
