Eyefear - A World Full Of Grey
The Australia-based Eyefear was formed in 1994 and this is their fourth album. They play solid, well crafted progressive power metal, both melodic and challenging, but lacking a definite edge to really set them apart. My first impression was great and highly promising, but after a while the album has settled in the "Solid and good" area. I miss songs and moments that are truly memorable.

Lead singer Danny Cecati (former Pegazus singer) has a nice voice and uses his range to the fullest, but especially his way of holding the higher notes becomes monotone after many listens. Technically skilled and musically tight, the musicians are all around great but everything is polished to a degree that shines a bit too bright and nothing really surprises.

All songs have their good points but especially A World Full of Grey and Haunted Memories stand out. The first because of strong driving guitar melody along with a convincing vocal performance and the latter due to a seriously infectous chorus.
The keyboard has a nice way of enhancing the music with an extra, soft layer. Lost Within is a good example where they keyboard flutters about on the outer fringe of the soundscape.
The eyes tell no lies also deserves a mention as Danny's emotional performance lifts the song.

Overall a consistent album that doesn't cover any new ground, but a pleasant acquaintance all the same. Compared to the debut, "Edge of Existence", "A World Full of Grey" is more melodic, but less aggressive. I miss some of that aggression. Hopefully the band will be back with a few more surprises next time.
