After a couple of self-released EP´s Enuff Z´Nuff singer and guitarist
Johnny Monaco debuts with his first real studio album "Overrated".
The first 4 songs are similar to the "Your Secrets Not safe with me" EP.
Read review of the EP. The infectious
I´ll take you as you are stands out with its catchy chorus.
Monaco doesn't contribute to the songwriting in Enuff Z´Nuff so this is his artistic playground. "Overrated" is 14 well penned power pop tunes with emphasis on hooks.
Johnny Monaco plays everything on the record and if you had to label this solo project, Butch Walker might be the best comparison.
The songs are multi layered and contain big vocal harmonies just like The Beatles and
Cheap Trick - just listen to
The model of a Woman. Speaking of The Beatles;
I like you more is a well perfected Beatles clone. The groovy McCartney-like bass line and infectious melody line makes it my personal favorite.
Even though most of the album is wrapped up in a contemporary sound
On a Shelf has a vintage sound. Monaco is inspired by the good old days where song writing was the most important ingredient for making an album. Another highlight is
Still Haven't Called, which sound a bit like what Monaco does for day job in Enuff Z´Nuff
"Overrated" is a great album because song writing is in focus; "Overrated" is about the songs. A playing time of 47 minutes with modern sounding power pop/rock proves what Enuff Z´Nuff fans have known for 10 years - this guy is talented.
