Events and Reports - Metallica - Metallica - Live At Vestereng, Århus. July 13th, 2007
Written by Tommy

A mild Friday night, 50.000 people, beer tents as long as the eye could reach and Metallica...the basic ingredients surely didn't leave much left to be wanted.

After the support gigs from Mnemic and Volbeat, Metallica hit the lights with Creeping Death blasting through the sound system, an energetic opener, effectual executed and with For Whom The Bell Tolls as next up classic. Regrettably the PA system failed shortly after the song kicked into gear but the band played on for a while, apparently unaware of the problem as the stage sound was left intact.
It took around 15 minutes before the intro of Wherever I May Roam indicated that the problem had been fixed...but what about Bells? They clearly should have played it from the top, that's just common decency towards the fans; half a song isn't a song.

Taped intros for ...And Justice For All and Battery were another thing that should not be. You clearly want to hear the band play the songs live, that's kind of the idea. Especially ...And Justice For All, which I had been looking very much forward to lost a bit of its magic here.
Battery together with the majestic Master Of Puppets were extremely tightly performed though, precise drumming, vigorous guitar riffing and elaborate soloing.

Disposable Heroes was cool to hear too, James raw vocals fit so well with the realistic lyrics and the "I was born for dying" line sent thrills through your entire body, unfortunately the different parts of the song seemed a bit unti(e)dy. As the final Master Of Puppets track Robert Trujillo played a decent bass solo as an introduction for the instrumental Orion, a very atmospheric piece that still sounded fresh but not quite with the thick mood or magic of the original.

Kirk had earlier on had his solo spot and while it gave some diversity to the show, it never really became interesting.

The Memory Remains rocked pretty hard and added a tempo-wise less aggressive breather to the show, No Leaf Clover on the other hand was a low point of the night. I don't know why they play medium songs as this one and I Disappear when many hardcore fans would be extremely pleased with either Motorbreath, Jump In The Fire, Fight Fire With Fire, Eye Of The Beholder, Don't Tread On Me or The Struggle Within to name a couple of personal favourites that rarely gets aired.

When you compare the different setlists from the "Sick of the studio tour" there really isn't that much variation, it would have been nice with a least one song you didn't expect at all.

Anyway you can't really go wrong with songs as Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Fade To Black and One and the crowd reacted with great joy and participated with lively gestures and loud singing through these world-class songs, but again not quite world-class performances.

Nothing Else Matters created quite the emotional mood and a positive vibe of togetherness among the many fans, fittingly added deep bass and strong vocals. Unfortunately the sound faded once again during the last section of the solo in Enter Sandman, otherwise a decent and groovy version.

As the first of the last encores Whiplash got a blistering and extremely intense treatment...a clear highlight of the night while Seek And Destroy sucked the remaining energy out of the crowd as James demanded some loud singing which ended the concert on a forceful note.
Afterwards both James and Lars talked to the audience and proclaimed that Metallica would return next year with a new album, I just wish they would have done some of this interacting within the actual concert and not as chaos broke loose as people tried to localise the exits.

There wasn't any doubt that the band appreciated the turn up and I think it's cool they focused on the first five albums (an incomparable stream of brilliance), an ode to the older fans.
This was just too much another day at the office, even though James can be extremely funny and energetic there wasn't that much dialogue or sing a long parts this evening and musically things could easily have been more tight and explosive, it was just too clear that something was missing on too many occasions.
This was a good show, but nothing more and that's kind of what you expect from such a band and with that ticket price (around 650 Kr. / 115 $).

So all in all this was not the kind of monster I had hoped for, sad but true.
Still the fans didn't pull the shortest straw and the memory will not fade to black, but remain as scattered imagery of One pleasant evening.
