Other information Band Profile
What is your name and your current position in the band?
My name is Erik Aadland, and I play the bass in Twisted into Form.
Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?
The band was formed by Kaj and myself in 2000. We had known each other since the early 90s, but then we were occupied in our separate bands. Initially, we were just sharing musical ideas and talking about our preferences regarding the band's expression. As time went by, the musical ideas became more structured, and we hooked up with David (Extol) to further expand upon this. I must say that the first rehearsal with David was really special. It's really something else to rehearse with a live drummer. It's just so much more organic than programming drum sketches on the computer and work with those. The crucial event that really made the album emerge was Kaj's decision to move to Portugal. At the time, we felt that the material we were working with had potential, and that it would be a shame to just let it lie. Therefore, we decided to record an album to document our achievement. After the album was finished, we were to shop for a label to release it. And that's what we did. So, things really escalated in terms of speed and energy once we had a deadline to make (Kaj's moving to Portugal).
Do you think Twisted Into Form ever will make it in the industry?
We have no ambition to make it in the industry really. We have an ambition to reach people who like intense music that defy categorization. Twisted into Form is not about trends or specific genres.
Why should people buy "Then Comes Affliction to Awaken the Dreamer"?
Because it offers something unique.
How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?
I think the style of the band is an amalgamation of several styles. It's what came naturally to us as we shared ideas and musical preferences. I guess the backbone is technical metal, but I feel the album sort of gives away other influences as well, such as jazz fusion and contemporary composers like Philip Glass.
Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?
I already mentioned the first rehearsal with David. That was really special. Another special moment was when we brought home the first raw mix of the album, allowing us to listen to the whole album in one listen. That was great after only having heard the songs separately for all those years. It came out even more intense than I had anticipated. I also remember quite well listening to the finished mixed version of the album courtesy of Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Nevermore, Brand X, Cannibal Corpse, etc) for the first time.
How is the writing process in the band?
Basically, Kaj and I make most of the main structures. We then meet up with David and expand on these. With "Then comes affliction." we also expanded on the structures in the studio, adding more layers of guitars, etc.
What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?
I'm currently travelling several paths. In addition to playing in Twisted, I'm also an aspiring academic.
Do you have any idols? If yes, who?
Not really.
Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? If so, what made you regret it?
No.
Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?
Great question. I don't think so.
How important do you rate the lyrical side of your album?
I think the lyrics on the album buttresses the feeling of the music. To this point, they may add an extra dimension to the experience.
What do you think about the state of the music industry today?
I don't pay attention to it. I don't listen to the radio or watch music video channels. I prefer to discover and choose my own music. I don't like being told what to like.
What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?
Not buying the album is perhaps your best contribution to not getting a new album by an artist that you really like (especially if the artist is struggling and not a superstar making tons of money doing the corporate thing).
Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?
Not really. I try not to fool myself. You never fool anyone but yourself. Reflexivity is a good thing.
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
Family and academics.
What do you like to spend your time with besides music?
My daughter, my girlfriend and academics.
What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?
The craziest tour related experience I've had was when the band I was playing in back in 1993 was to play a festival and the band before us on the bill played for so long that we were not allowed to play! The headliner had a fixed starting time in their contract.that sucked.
You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)
Albums: Songs of faith and devotion (Depeche Mode), Broken Wing (Chet Baker), Left hand path (Entombed)
What is your favourite joke?
I don't have one.
Can you tell us about any future plans for you and Twisted Into Form?
We'll make some more songs eventually. We've also talked about editing some video footage from the studio for our MySpace page.
Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers and the Twisted Into Form fans.
