British Rock group
Rattlesnake Remedy is a fine retro exponent of the classic British rock, which was founded by bands like
Led Zeppelin and Bad Company. Especially
Led Zeppelin sounds like a huge influence on the band and vocalist Lee Stone in particular.
"Magic Man" is
Rattlesnake Remedy's debut album and if you neglect the sparse production these guys sound and play like veteran musicians. If you have any doubts - that is a compliment! Last year the band played 126 gigs and in between concerts they also managed to record this album. Yours truly had the pleasure of viewing the band live in the UK in April 2006 (
Read live review) and compared to that powerhouse performance they sound a bit encapsulated on record.
Just like their live show
Rattlesnake Remedy opens with
Black Sheep Fiddle, which also is the highlight of "Magic Man". The song has edge, attitude and a catchy chorus. I have been humming this song for around 6 weeks trying to imitate Lee Stone´s high voice, which blends perfectly with the aggressive guitars. Sharing the honor as album highlight is the title track, which has a unique drive. Again the match of Stone´s vocals and the two guitarists is amazing.
Drag You Down is the first single off the album - a catchy rocker based in traditional riff driven Rock n' Roll.
Free To Feel has an amazing flow and grows on you. It's an easy going ballad giving Stone´s expressive vocals room to unfold accompanied by great guitar work from Ben Bartlett. The same goes for
Angels Eyes, which is another strong and emotional ballad.
Angels Eyes holds so much emotion caused by Stone´s expressive vocals and it builds up by adding layers of musical emotion.
The album also has its share of straight rockers;
Nothing Right, Falling Away and
Killing Time are all great examples of the energy that these young Birmingham men possesses
"Magic Man" is a consistent and comprehensive debut album.
Rattlesnake Remedy tours extensively in support of the album, but I am already looking forward to album number two.
Black Sheep Fiddle will forever be a kick ass rock favorite
