Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

I'm Antti Matilainen the lead singer of HOS.

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

The band was formed early 2005 by Teemu Hänninen, our lead guitarist. Me, Teemu H and Teemu A are old school mates so we have known each other for ten years now. Jari came along through Teemu H. They know each other from the band Requiem in where they both played. I think that those Requiem-years have been Teemus and Jaris golden years so far. Me and Teemu A haven't been part of any larger projects.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

Our goal was to form a band that would break right into the industry, haha. So no, we have never though that way.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

Our debut album is named Manifesto. Reason to buy.that's a tough one. If one likes hard 'n heavy and especially black or death metal etc then go and buy it.

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

Our style is formed from various styles but our mainline is death metal. From the beginning this style has been our way so no we have not considered any other genre.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

Favourite moments are our training and recording sessions. Specially when stirred up with some bear, haha.

How is the writing process in the band?

Usually it goes like this that our guitarist and keyboardist does some riffs or a whole song and I or someone else writes lyrics to it. Then we do some sculpturing to the structure and lyrics and after that we record a demo of the song. We listen the demo few days and do some decisions concerning the length and other things and if it pleases us we train it little until at some point it gets to some album.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

We all have grown into this thing so it was quite intentional choice from all of us to work as musicians. Of course we all have or will have our civil professions.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

I think that one idol for us is Yngwie Malmsteen. He is after all one real good guitarist and musician. And of course we all have our own personal idols.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

I can't say that I have any regretting on anything. I don't know about the rest of the band.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

Can't say that we do. We try not to record song that we don't like 'cause then there's no point doing this. And we don't do something to just please someone else.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

Well the importance of lyrics are always in the listeners ears. But we try to keep some level on our lyrics because they are after all quite important for us. There are of course some abstract and weird or even quite naïve lyrical production but they tend to contain some message.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

Music industry is quite commercial business today. Sometimes it's quite harsh too. Generally the music industry is rolled by big money like everything in this world today. And there are directions that wish only to get rich by artists expense. One good thing is that today artists are quite aware that they are not just slaves for the industry and get what belongs to them.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

I think one good way is to sell music in the Internet because it's quite easy way to buy music and you get the album immediately for your self and you can easily take it where ever you want in some small device. I think that people would be willing to pay if the product is easy to get from their "natural habiting area" in this case the Internet for some, haha. There are weapons of law to fight against piracy but there's always the question of surveillance of the users.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

I can discuss of that matter after good sauna and some icy vodka.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Well, I get up at some point in the morning and prepare my self to learn some business knowledge. Day goes running some training business etc. Along the day I write some lyrics or train our songs with bass guitar. At some point I train my muscles a little and eat some heavy food. And I must confess that I play a lot PC games. Then at some point at evening I drink few beers and watch some TV. I'll go to sleep if I remember to.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

With my car or my woman, haha.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

We will see what it will be once we get on a tour.

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

I can't tell any specific albums, hard to decide, same thing with movies. I wouldn't take any books, I'd prefer to write some of my own while being there.

What is your favourite joke?

I hate jokes, haha.

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

There are plans for our next album but more of that later. Some plans to spend some time in the studio and at our training place. I can't tell nothing about the touring right now so we will see about that.

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

Hear us and fear us, haha. Have a great rest of the summer. Thank you.
