Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

Max - Lead screamin` asshole!
Mick - Guitars!
Muggsy - Bass
Wim - Skinbeater

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

Muggsy - We all met outside the Motley Crue reunion gig last year and started going on about music (as you do) during the interval. Turned out we all had songs, talent and drive. Was kinda inevitable. 2 days later, Nothin To Lose is born in the Intrepid Fox pub in Soho. As for highlights, i KNOW that we all class headlining the Underworld show 'The Xmas Rock Xplosion' at one of our best so far, what with the stage show and the crowd turnout and the general atmosphere. PLus it was Christmas as near-as-dammit so everyone was laid back and enjoying themselves. There haven't been too many low points other than the inevitable arguing over some things, but nothing we couldn't sort out with a few beers.

The most crucial event and the one which gave the band most recognition would definitely have to be getting demo of the month in Metal Hammer. That showed our fans and friends that we meant business and people were starting to take notice, and, more importantly, like the stuff we're doing.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

Mick - Not really. You look at the state of some of the garbage you have to read about in magazines and see on the TV etc and it was always blatantly obvious that if that those guys can achieve so much and yet suck so badly, people are always gonna like you if you kick ass.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

Mick - We`re currently putting the finishing touches to our yet-to-be-titled debut album. People should buy it because it rocks! If you wanna hear an album that`s in-your-face, good old-fashioned ass-kicking rock n roll then it`s the album for you. If you wanna hear something that`s a sub-standard version of what we`re doing, buy something else!

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

Mick - When you play the style of music that we do people put it into different categories. Some say rock, some say metal, every now and again someone will insist we`re a sleaze band or a `glam` band. I`d say we`re definitely not a glam band - to me glam was always acts like Gary Glitter or Slade, guys like that. Our influences are drawn from all over the place....if I had to pick a genre I`d say it was more hard rock/rock n roll.

Wim - A couple of our newer songs are maybe a bit heavier, but it's always gonna be Rock 'n Roll for me.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

Wim - Muggsy arriving at rehearsal the day after Max's birthday earlier this
year, he kept falling over - PRICELESS!!!

Mick - We`ve done a lot of really cool shows, and I think our favourite
times, or certainly mine, are when you`re playing a packed-out show and
everything rocks. Who wouldn`t like that? You`re up onstage looking cool,
boosting your profile and then you can pick any girl you want from the crowd
afterwards!

Muggsy - Yeah! That and being able to take naughty substances in clubs after
a gig and not having to endure any grief from the managers. Thank fuck for
backstage areas. Also means you can take said girl backstage with you.

How is the writing process in the band?

Mick - I think it`s pretty much the same as with every other band. I might
come up with a riff, or Muggsy might come up with some bass groove, Max`ll
find a cool melody to sing and Wim ties it all together some some kickass
solid drumming! Before you know it, you`ve got your next track!

Muggsy- Also, if you're going to write some music, even it is good time hard
rock like we do, then for fucks sake don't get hammered before doing it. It
may seem like a good idea but you'll never remember what the hell you did.
Buy a shitty recorder and just before you leave play as a band what you just
wrote. (and don't leave it in the pub afterwards!)

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider
or take any other paths through life besides music?

Mick - I remember being at school and being told I should study to be a
dentist. With the absence of any other ideas at the time, I thought that
maybe I`d do it. That was until I heard Randy Rhoads playing guitar on Ozzy
Osbourne`s `Blizzard of Ozz` album....when it became blatantly clear to me
what it was I wanted to do!

Wim - I used to go see a local band play live almost every weekend when I
was in high school, helped them as a roadie, and just experiencing the power
of being at a live show and seeing these guys havin' SO much fun - I knew,
THIS was it!!! I got a drumkit and that's where it all started. Doesn't
matter what job I do, if I'm not able to play/create music, it all becomes
senseless and I start going nuts.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

Max - I wouldn't say idols as such but I have a lot of people who I have the
utmost respect for in music...Stiv Bators..Johnny Thunders...Mike
Ness..basically any musician who lays their heart on the table and creates
music that isn't just songs. It's everything.

Wim - I agree with Max, respect to someone like Ozzy Osbourne, and good luck
to Paul McCartney!!!

Mick - I have a few idols....some not necessarily guys you`d expect me to
say. Guitar-wise, Yngwie Malmsteen is a God. I hear a lot of people say that
he sucks, and when they say that I wanna smash them over the head with my
guitar. Like his music or not, I`m in awe of his guitar playing, and more so
the level of dedication and perseverance it will have taken him to reach
that standard. I have a big respect for guys that kick serious ass through
nothing else than their own determination to do so. Gene Simmons is probably
in the number one spot though. To go from a kid in Israel with nothing to
forming one of the most successful bands of all time deserves serious amount
of respect in my opinion.

Muggsy - Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. I don't idolise
Steve Harris for his bass playing even though it rules. But for the sort of
person he is and how he approaches Iron Maiden. Just like Mick said about
Gene Simmons, this guy worked his balls off to make it, and he was from the
East End of London, which is probably about as bad as Israel on some days!!
But he takes no shit from people who are holding the band back, a trait I
sometimes wish we'd have adopted a few months back! And Bruce Dickinson
because he's cool, and he fronts Iron Maiden, and they rule too. Especially
cool after he handled that confrontation with Sharon Osbourne at last years
Ozzfest when she and her crew pelted Maiden with eggs, lighters and spit,
and he just waved the Union Jack flag and screamed 'These colours don't
run'. Fucking YES!!

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs
or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret
it?

Max - I make too many mistakes to have regrets. I wouldn't be able to drag
myself out of bed in the morning! haha.

Mick - I don`t have anything in particular I would regret. A mistake`s only
a mistake if you refuse to learn from it, and the things that have happened
in the past have put you where you are today - and we`re happy with the way
things are going!

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're
not particularly fond of yourself?

Maxi - Well no cause then we wouldn't play them.

Muggsy - To be honest, i think the reason we're doing well is the fact that
we know our fans and we know basically what they want to hear. Thats not to
say all our shit is perfect, but when we wrote 'Bad Habit' we knew that
people were gonna love it. The same with the rest of the songs. Much like
our new song 'Going Down' which we performed for the first time at the
Underworld gig last week with the Tokyo Dragons. People went fucking mental,
they loved it. Its also got a different feel to it, a bit more menacing and
powerful, but still Nothin To Lose.

Mick - I think we`ve got a `no fillers` rule. We`re proud of our songs, and
I don`t think there are any in particular we don`t like. If we thought it
sucked, we wouldn`t play it!

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

Muggsy - You know what we're about when you see us. We're under no delusions
of grandeur, we're not changing the world, our lyrics aren't gonna feed the
starving or save the Wombat or whatever. But its important to keep the
content filthy but not moronic. And its nice to write songs that aren't all
about sex and drugs. But people seem to love those ones. A lot of people
have come up to us and say that they like to fuck whilst listening to our
demo. As long as they're not thinking of me specifically then best of luck
to them.

Wim - I think most of our songs are anthemic, you can't help but throw your
fist in the air and sing along!

Mick - I think lyrics are important, but they`re nothing if you don`t have a
cool melody to sing them to. I read somewhere that Kurt Cobain never gave a
crap about the lyrical content, so long as the melody was good. I think you
hear a lot of songs that you might consider to be brilliant, but when you
actually see the lyrics written in front of you they might suck! We like to
have good lyrics, but I think the most important thing is to have a catchy
melody to sing them to.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

Mick - Lots of people complain about the state of the music industry, but I
don`t really see how it`s any better or worse than it`s ever been - it`s all
about what style of music you`re into! If you`re were a rock n roll fan when
Nirvana were topping the charts you`d probably have said it sucked then.
Likewise when rock n roll first topped the charts in the 50s .... if you
were a Frank Sinatra fan at the time you might well have said i was a
disgrace. We just know that whatever style of music is `in` at the
time...people will always want to come see you play if you play quality rock
n roll songs!

Wim - All I can say is Rock & Roll has stood the test of time, in all it's
shapes and forms - it has always been the "peoples" music, normal working
class guys like Black Sabbath, Machine Head etc... Don't worry, it'll always
be alive and well, as long as we keep playing! As for the industry, they
don't have enough people to discover REAL talent! That's where things like
Myspace is great to help take your music to the people.

Maxi - Shit.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

Muggsy - No idea! To be honest, I never really thought about it until we
started getting near the end of the album we're doing now. And then you only
really start worrying about it. To be honest theres no way of fighting it
fully. Even my close mates all say, 'oh yeah when you've got the songs down
give me a copy so i can burn it onto my computer. Loadsa people are gonna do
that aren't they.........shiiiiiiiiiit!!!

Maxi - Stop charging so much for music. It's pretty fuckin simple. But the
industry is a business centred around the labels not the artists. So
basically theres a no win situation.

Wim - Become a pirate?

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Mick - You make your own luck in life. Anybody who is successful didn`t get
there by chance - it`s fucking hard work and they worked every step of the
way. I guess my life philosophy would be that you get out what you put
in....so roll your fuckin sleeves up and go for it! If you don`t, one day
you`ll be and old man, realise it`s too late to do it, and wish you had.

Maxi - Live?

Muggsy - If you stick your head above the trench wall, you're going to get
shot at. But when have you felt so alive?

Wim - It's better to regret something you DID, than something you were too
pussy-arsed to even give a shot!

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Mick - Wake up between two girls, play guitar, smoke cigarettes, play a cool
rock show, pull some girls and repeat.

Muggsy - Wake up between two cars, play with self, smoke rollies, play bass
in cool rock show, pull some wierdos (coz thats what i loikes) and tell
jokes

Maxi - Wake up covered in bruises hungover and then get drunk.

Wim - Wake & bake, realise you are thirsty as hell, so you grab a beer, and
after that - it's downhill all the way!!!

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

Wim - Good friends, Vitamin THC, GREAT amounts of cheese and ... BEER, of
course!!!

Muggsy - We're all very busy people. I'm also a stand up comedian and in a
Rammstein tribute band. Nothin To Lose it obviously the priority by far, but
its a good feeling to have a full life y'know? I'm also a jewellery dealer.
NOT a dodgy one by the way!! Mick's getting into music promotion, Max is a
d.j and Wim plays in a whole heap of other bands. That guy just fucking
LOVES music.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

Maxi - The fact we've ever actually made it to any of the shows!

Mick - We played a show in Birmingham and on the drive up there we were
nearly wiped out by this car smash that happened. The car in the right-hand
lane hit the barrier, skidded across the front of us completely sideways and
got ripped to bits by a royal mail truck in the far lane! Everything ground
to a halt and we were lucky not to get hit! Then you realised you had to get
the hell out of there before the cars behind doing 80 smashed into you! Was
pretty ridiculous.

Wim - I was on tour once where the car we were driving in, had it's
wheel-nuts come loose, luckily we realised something was wrong before the
wheel came off, but when we wanted 2 put the spare tyre on, 2 of the
wheelnuts BROKE OFF solidly!!!

Muggsy - Throwing up on max after smelling the inside of his leather jacket
and having him get glandular fever because of it whilst I stayed fresh and
healthy. Yeah, that was funny

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with
your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would
you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Wim - Defintely the Brentford Trilogy books by Robert Rankin, any "Best Of"
John Lee Hooker album (as long as it's got "Blues Before Sunrise" on) AND my
Machine Head LIVE @ Brixton Academy DVD!!!

Mick - KISS Unplugged in New York, Some Schwarzenegger movies, our CD and
maybe a Stephen King novel. I used to read a lot of that. I`ve always had
this kinda morbid interest in true crime, so maybe I`d take something to
read that was a little heavier. I`d probably take a Black Label society CD.
Been listening to a lot of that recently too!

Muggsy - If i say Harry Potter would you kill me? Yes? Ok then, probably a
huuuuuuuge fucking book coz i get bored easily, 'Dance of Death' by Maiden
and the Disney version of Aladin, coz the Genie in that is possibly the best
characyer ever created (after Homer Simpson) but we've all seen the Simpsons
waaaaaaay too much.

What is your favourite joke?

Muggsy - Come check out my next comedy gig. Then you'll find out.

Wim - Mine's a bit long, but here goes... "A pot-smoker, an acid-head and a
speed-freak gets to this HUGE town in the middle of nowhere, and the town is
surrounded by 50ft walls and there's 2 BIG doors which is the only way in.
They're obviously locked, so our 3 drug-heroes have to make a plan. First
the speed-freak says: Why don't we all take 10g's of speed and just RUN
up-and-over the walls? The acid-head replies: If we all take like a sheet of
acid, we can just become dust and float in through the keyhole. All this
time, the stoner just sat rollin' up a big fatty, lights it up now, takes a
couple of DEEP tugs and says... WHY DON'T WE JUST WAIT???"

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Mick - We`re gonna be the biggest band on the planet and don`t care how we
get there. People can laugh if they like....but they laughed at Ozzy
Osbourne whe he said HE was gonna be famous. When we do it, everybody who
doubted us can kiss our ass.

Wim - One thing I've learnt is that you can NEVER predict what curve-balls
life is gonna chuck at ya, BUT I do believe in the power of music, go for
your dreams, coz hey, you got Nothin' To Lose!

Maxi -No matter what happens whether we're playing toilet venues til were 50
or we actually manage to get our lousy asses signed. We will continue to
kick ass and keep rocknroll alive. Fuck fame fuck glory, as long as people
get it and come out and support and keep this music alive. Thats all we
fucking need.

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines
