Other information Band Profile
What is your name and your current position in the band?
Marius and i am one of two guitarists
Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?
The band came together in 1998 but only two of the founder members still resides with the band, Vegard (drums) and Frank (guitars)
The band really took shape when the pair found vocalist Tony and Bassplayer Morten, two childhood friends, who in turn brought in Marius, an old bandmate from years past to replace the departing lead guitarist. This was just prior to the recording of "love and destruction".
Notable past members includes Cato Syversrud (l.guit) and Andreas Tylden of J.R Ewing fame.
As with any working band there has been trials and tribulations, as well as the high points. The recent King Diamond tour was a blast for the boys, and a well earned celebration given the sometimes difficult circumstances suffered during the production of "Love and Destruction".
People may be aware of the fact that it took quita a long time between the two albums so it kinda feels like we`re starting over again, but the initial response among audiences has been encouraging
Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?
Of course, everybody must have thought about it. But dreams tend to be much stronger than pending reality...
What is your latest album and why should people buy it?
It is called "Love and Destruction" and you should buy it because it is classic old-school heavy metal crafted in a way that can only be good for you.
How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?
Some place between Heavy Metal and Heavy Rock. No double kickdums, no dragons and fairie lyrics, just rock. Morten, Tony and Marius all have various other projects in wich to play different kinds of music so the vibe inside Thunderbolt is: "Lets make thundermusic" All eventual itches for
something different gets scratched outside the band, dude
Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?
Touring gives a lot of memorable moments. Playing heavy metal also gives you a lot of spinal tap moments. Our pyro exploded on us inside our dressing room before a show last year, which was good fun. Again, the recent K.D tour was a high point and we loved it very much.
How is the writing process in the band?
Very democratic, everyone usually has a say in how the songs turn out. Much of the lyrics from the new album was penned by Vegard and Tony
What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?
My mother was a vocalist and my father a working musician, they met eachother on the road in norway. Safe to say that I didnt have much choice. It was like the instant I became aware of what music was, then "pow": Thats were i wanted to be. And no, I would never ever find anything else that will give me so much joy
Do you have any idols? If yes, who?
For me it was AC/DC who got me on track. I was like 11 when thunderstruck came out and they would show it on Mtv and Ì wondered what the fuck this crazy shit was that sounded so good compared to the other pop-crap that was on at the time. So we got their (until then) recent albums and discovered that there was a huge back catalog with a different singer, so we started digging deeper and became aware of that hallowed decade of rock, the 70`s. So we got into all this old music and to me personally that is still the music that kicks the deepest. I also take a interest in the old country and blues guitarslingers that influenced those guys (and still permutates guitar today.) Actually, I think I am the one bandmember who listens to "Pure" metal the least ha ha
Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?
Nah, the last album took way too much time to get done, but it is a nice record so it evens out.
Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?
We Will Survive is probably a song we`ll start to hate in a few years time haha Well, I personally like to play all of them, being the fresh face in the band and all...
How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?
Pretty much. We thought it would be nice to bring up some issues of modern life but try to do it a bit differently. We will Survive is almost a novelty type tribute to how it is to be a rocker, and bad boys deals with many of the same issues but in a more serious, narrative way.
What do you think about the state of the music industry today?
Metal fans will always think of the industry as fucked because our music will probably always remain a musical minority compared to the pop side of the biz. I cannot say whether it is the industry that makes the shit music, or the people that keep buying it that is responsible for the current state of music. But there is certainly an influx of assholes where ever there is money to be made and the awkward pairing of the starving musician and the moneygrabbing business man who has never played a note himself is always a good (and often true) clichè
What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?
I doubt there is any real hope of global supression of piracy. Heck, I`ve been known to fetch a tune or two for myself so what can i say? Maybe the industry should look at the promotional opportunities given by the freedom of the internet.
Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?
Take each day as it comes, youre not given any more of them. And remember, it`s just a ride so just chill out when the chips are down and life is tough (bill hicks anyone...)
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
Eat, shit, sleep and play. Over and over
What do you like to spend your time with besides music?
I like to read a lot, history is really my thing. I`ve studied religion so that also goes into the equation. Other than that theres the usual set of activities done by 25 year old boys. The other guys also got their stuff, Morten likes folklore, woodwork and that kinda stuff. Tony enjoys a little football now and then etc.
What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?
Seriously, I can`t tell. It would just upset a lot of people
You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)
I hate these questions because these things tend to change a bit but heres what popped into my mind just now:
Books:
Letters from Ground Zero
Hunger
inside The third reich
Albums:
Powerage - AC/DC
The meters - The Meters
Meshuggah - Catch 33
Movies:
The last waltz
The Good The Bad & The Ugly
Ghost Dog
What is your favourite joke?
Any recent r`n`b, rap or technosong is my favorite joke
Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?
Try to raise our profile a bit, write and record a third album, Hopefully we`ll be on another european trek soon. Never played in Denmark before so that would be most awesome. As you might know, we norwegians simply adore our danish brethren and we love spending time down there. Other than that theres a small norwegian tour this fall with mr. Paul Dianno. Me and Morten (bass) will also be featured in his band as we have done a couple of times now. Great guy by the way
Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.
Give "love and destruction" a try, it`ll grow on you i promise. See you around from a stage somewhere.
hail hail rock`n `roll
