Godyva - In Goood and Evil
It is all about atmosphere. Godyva "In Good and Evil" prides itself on embracing the darkness and projecting a sweeping gothic vision. Every nuance of the music is simply there to play a supporting role, second to the lead frontvixen, Lady Godyva and her sultry voice. There are few instances where any particular instrument stands out, they all melt together like candlewax, with the Lady as the guiding flame. Production-wise it is surprisingly clean and crisp. Musically you can toss this in the same category as Theater of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence and Doro's industrialized "Machine II Machine". Just keep in mind the main appealing factor here is the female vocals and the ambieance created by the music. Deep diving and oftentimes depressing, this is moody music for reflection and not a fist pumping metal joyride.

Building...building... "Dreams of a Child" has this haunting, intense feel with strange and warped lyrics built around an industrial inspired base of operations. Lady Godyva really wails too. She has a unique voice that could come from the throat of a succubus. The title track is more accessible with a bit of a hook to be found when sorting through the ashes. It has sparks of melody that the majority of the other songs are seriously lacking. "Light at Last" has a few vocal moments where Lady Godyva rises like a goth angel. All the others sound fairly the same, except for the heavier intricacies of "Cold" which is a trippy metal journey into shadows, buried six feet under in its gothic angstiness. A wider diversity of sounds would have made the tracks stand out better on their own. As it is, this is one long parade of cheerless, somber music with an inner thread of nu-metal running underneath the goth trappings.

Despite the fact that the CD has the tendency to run together when listened to in a single sitting, this is still a very enjoyable disc to play through. The morose aspect of the atmosphere kind of sucks you in and the vocals are captivating especially if you listen closely to the lyrics and drown yourself in the dark drenched vibe that engulfs this release. Those that like their music on the gothic side with a soft spot for chick singers will be delighted with Godyva. Overall its a nice package of atramentous music that will stir the doubts and demons of your inner soul
