What is your name and your current position in the band?

Jon Howard - Vocals

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

We started Threat Signal in late 2003. That's when myself, Kyle, and Rich got together and started writing. We really didn't know what we wanted to create, but we knew it had to be really heavy and also combine hooks and melody. We all live in the same neighborhood and listen to the same music, so it was an obvious choice to get together and create some music. Since then we've recorded our debut album in Los Angeles with Christian Olde Wolbers of Fear Factory, signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Records, playing Earthshaker festival in Germany, recorded a professional music video, and we are touring the US with Soilwork, Mnemic and Darkest hour this fall.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

The music industry came to us so fast we didn't even have time to think about it. We were 3 kids writing songs in a basement, recording them, and putting them online. We didn't even have a full band and we were getting record companies knocking on our door.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

Our latest and first album to date is titled 'Under Reprisal'. People should buy this album because it doesn't sound like every other heavy album coming out these days. Its not nu-metal, its not metalcore, its not screamo bullshit, its pure ass kicking metal.

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

We grew up listening to a lot of rock and metal. We are mainly a metal band, but you can hear other elements inside the music. We've never thought of playing anything but heavy ass whooping music.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

Flying to Los Angeles and living in Christian's house with the band. That was a dream. We had an amazing time recoding and hanging out with an amazing dude!

The first time we set foot on stage with our full band. Myself, Rich, Kyle, Marco, and George the animal steel!

How is the writing process in the band?

The songs are written on a PC. Each song and riff idea is tabbed into a program called guitar pro. Kyle is the main music writer in the band with help from Rich. We send the songs back and forth over the internet and fine tune the arrangements and riffs. We rarely get together and jam on songs unless they are completed on the computer first. It's a very precise way of writing, and allows you to create some crazy shit you didn't think was possible!

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

My dream has always been to be in a band and tour the world. I think I wanted to be a hockey player at some point, but that didn't last! I've been playing music since I was a kid. My family is very musically oriented, so it fits well for me. I studied Architecture in school and was quite good at it, but when Threat Signal started to take off, I never looked back.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

George Parfitt. That bastard knows how to drink!!! And defiantly Mr. T

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

Sure I was in some terrible high school bands, and have recorded some lame vocals, but that's a stepping stone. You have to work your way through the shit to become a better musician. You can't start at the top. I have no regrets for anything that I have done musically.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

We have one album, and I'm proud of every single song on it. We have no filler, its all fuckin killer.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

My lyrics are very important to me. I spend a lot of time thinking about what I am saying. I don't sound like an idiot. There has to be some sort of content within the lyrics. If I'ts just none sense, then what the hell is the point.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

It's a crazy place.I never knew how much bullshit went on in the music industry. I thought it would just be parties and playing kick ass music, but there is much more to think about thank that!

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

You can't fight it. People are always going to find a way to get your music without buying a CD. I think CD's will eventually become obsolete.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Don't get caught with your hand in the cookie jar!

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Wake up at 7:30am (GUH) go to work building custom bass guitars www.fbass.com. Get home at 4:00pm and do band related stuff all night. Weekends are different though. I get totally shit faced at night and sleep all day!

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

Building guitars, editing videos, bmx riding, fishing, hanging with friends, and drinking.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

Threat Signal has never toured! Our first tour is this fall with Soilwork.

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Albums: Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
Threat Signal - Under Reprisal
Metallica - And Justice for All

Movies: House of 1000 Corpses
Pantera 3 - Watch it go
Se7en

What is your favourite joke?

How do you make a little girl cry twice?

Wipe your bloody dick off on her teddy bear

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Album release in Europe May 26th, North America August 22nd
Earth Shaker festival in Germany July 20th
US tour with Soilwork, Mnemic, Darkest hour in October
