Band profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

My name is Thorsten Koehne. Iīm guitarist and songwriter.

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

Well, the low point definitely was when my old band DEMON DRIVE split in 2003. But as a result of this I thought it was time to do my own thing, so the band CODE OF PERFECTION was formed in 2005. Ex-DEMON DRIVE band mate Jochen Mayer offered me to produce an album and we recruted several musicians that we already knew and that would fit into the project.

First up was ex-DEMON DRIVE band mate Frank Kraus. Heīs an excellent drummer, we share the same musical background and heīs able to play the highly technical stuff that we wanted to do. Then Carsten Lizard Schulz came into play for vocals. Jochen suggested him cause they play together in the band DOMAIN and heīs an extraordinary singer. Then again Carsten introduced us to japanese bass virtuoso Keisuke Nishimoto which he knew from a tour with KELLY SIMONZ BLIND FAITH.

The highlight last year was definitely getting signed to label LMP. They give us great support!

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

With a mostly instrumental album in store of course we had some doubts if the general heavy metal audience would like it, specially these days! But "making it" in the industry was never our first intention. We just wanted to translate our musical visions into action and make an album that WE would like. We got lucky and a lot of people like it too.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

The album is called "LAST EXIT FOR THE LOST" and itīs a wild and crazy guitar trip! Thereīs lotīs of different musical elements on it and I think itīs just fun to listen to and very entertaining. From high speed metal to emotional ballads to big rock songs the album has a lot to offer. If you like fast guitars and heavy metal you should definitely check out "LAST EXIT FOR THE LOST"!

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

With CODE OF PERFECTION I think weīre able to play any style we want! Though itīs basically a heavy metal band and sound, we have influences from all styles of music so thereīs no creative need to do something else. We make the music that we like! LMP labeled us "melodic virtuosity metal". Weīre perfectly fine with that!

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

Well, the band is really brand new so thereīs not so much to look back on yet but having Michael Angelo Batio play a guest solo on the album was a great moment for me cause heīs one of my all time favourite guitar players and it was a dream come true for me.

How is the writing process in the band?

"LAST EXIT FOR THE LOST" has mostly songs on it that I had written. So I came up with the main material and ideas, then Jochen and I spent some time on it arranging the songs and trying out different versions of it. Also I co-wrote the vocal songs with Carsten Lizard who had great ideas for lyrics, lines and the whole vocal arrangements. So basically I provide the main material and then the rest of the guys have their input on it and we take whatever sounds best.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

I think every person has a natural talent for something in life, you just have to find out what it is. I discovered at an early age that mine was music and I always felt the natural urge to do music. Itīs not about getting famous or earning a lot of money or getting all the girls or anything like that.So thatīs the main reason: Just makin music!

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

I really admire Yngwie Malmsteen for what heīs doing as a guitar player. When I grew up Brian May of Queen was my hero. He was the reason I picked up the guitar. Also Eddie Van Halen has a huge influence.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

So far, no! I really enjoyed playing and working on all of the albums. You can only learn. I just wish we had recorded a better version of "Warp Speed, Now!" on the ATTACK album "THE SECRET PLACE".

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

No.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

Itīs as important as the music but sometimes itīs not only WHAT you sing but HOW you sing it. Words can take on a whole different meaning by just phrasing or pronouncing them differently. But weīre an mostly instrumental band so we donīt have to write that many lyrics.we hope the music deliveres the message!

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

Itīs pretty hard these days for a young band to gain recognition by the big record companies, even if they are very good, simply because thereīs so many bands these days and due to illegal downloads and copying CDs the record labels donīt have that much money anymore to support bands so they only take whatīs a save buck for them and thatīs usually the stuff that we see everyday on MTV.
But thereīs so much more great music out there. Internet really helps to get the music across to the fans without the support of big companys.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

Start with yourself! Donīt illegaly download or copy music and really buy the CDs of the bands that you're a fan of to support them and to make sure they can continue making albums. Get back to having a selective taste on what you really want to hear and what not.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Music is music and guitars are guitars.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

I get up, have breakfast, play guitar, have lunch, play guitar some more, have dinner, play guitar till I fall asleep.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

Computer, sports, travelling, science, girls, TV, relaxing in the wellness area

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

I couldnīt find the stage.Spinal Tap in real life!

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Albums:
Racer X - Street Lethal
Van Halen - First
Queen - Live Killers

Movies:
Blade Runner
Dune
Flash Gordon

Books:
David Lee Roth - Crazy From The Heat

What is your favourite joke?

What's the difference between a guitar player and a bag of garbage ?
The garbage gets taken out at least once a week.

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Next up weīll start working on the new album and we hope we can establish CODE OF PERFECTION in the international heavy metal scene.

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

Please buy our album, itīs a good one!
