Crystal Pistol has been getting rave reviews all over the world and a finally a delayed promo arrived, so we could investigate what the buzz was all about.
Crystal Pistol hails from Canada and plays old school sleaze rock. However, there is a significant touch of
AC/DC and Motorhead in their music. On a few tracks lead singer Mike Ireland uses a slight vocal distortion, which brings a modern touch to their music as well.
This is a debut album and
Crystal Pistol definitely has a lot going for them. They have the look, a great singer in Mike Ireland and they have got a great sound - hotshot Mike Fraser has mixed the album.
Rock Star has an irresistible bouncy vibe with a sing-along chorus, which could be mistaken for a minor hit even though it's simple 3-chord
AC/DC Rock.
Salt of the Earth is another tune with hit potential since
Crystal Pistol slows it down and it brings a needed variation to the album.
However, the material lacks the final touch to completely justify the great reviews. Several songs are standard Hard Rock played with a very authentic and real attitude, but sometimes
Crystal Pistol tends to sound repetitive. The swaggering
Shake needs a tail or a bridge to avoid it from being monotone.
Locomotive is a shining example of the songwriting needs improvement.
Keep in mind this is a debut album and I really look forward to album number two since the strong sides of this band are significant ingredients to fuel
Crystal Pistol's chance to really make it. They just need to cut a few loose ends - the remedies and attitude are right.
If you want to get this album you get 11 tracks of 3-chord powerful Rock in a running time of 36 minutes.
Crystal Pistol fails to convince me on this album.
