Events and Reports - Withering Surface - W:O:A Wet Stage 2/8 2002
Withering Surface was one of the bands I really had been looking forward to seeing at Wacken. That was not just because they are Danish, but because it is a great band playing melodic death metal. Pretty Maids and Withering Surface were the only Danish bands playing at Wacken this year, so they really had something to prove to the rest of the metal world.
The concert was unfortunately a couple of hours late, so it was a great feeling when the WS flag was finally hung up. Withering Surface played at Wacken's Wet Stage which was located close to the True Metal stage. It was in a tent which was OK, but it would have been really cool to hear them on one of the bigger stages - maybe we will see them on The Black stage some time!?.
They opened the concert with the title number from their latest album Walking On Phantom Ice, and after some beginning trouble the concert was going strong. Lead singer Michael H. Andersen was really in the mood, and they played one classic song after another - my favorites were Beautybeast (Scarlet Silhouettes album) and Dancing With Fairies (The Nude Ballet album), but Separation and Breed What You Kill (both from Walking On Phantom Ice album) were really great too. Actually all the songs on their set were favorites of mine, but I really missed Scarlet Silhouettes and Whorebride. Finally they played a couple of new numbers from their coming album (I wonder when we hear some more about that!?).
Their sound was pretty good - well, as good as you can get it in a tent anyway, and there was a great atmosphere in there. It was a pretty mixed crowd in the tent - there were a lot of Danish people in there, but I think there were quite a lot of non-Danes too. Judging by the heavy head banging I conclude that everyone had a great time hearing the Danish version of In Flames.
All in all it was a great concert even though it wasn't the best live performance ever from Withering Surface. It was a shame that the concert was delayed - I spoke with several people who missed the concert because of that. Like a lot of other Wacken concerts this concert was way too short, but I guess that's the how the conditions allow it. It was just an appetizer for Denmark's best melodic death band. We are looking forward to hearing them the 13/9 in Musikcaféen, Aarhus!
