Events and Reports - Immortal - W:O:A Black Stage 3/8 2002
The Norwegian black metal band Immortal is more popular than ever, and there is a damned good reason for that - Immortal rules! Their new album "Sons Of Northern Darkness" is maybe the best album I have ever heard in that genre. Only their own "Battles In The North" and Burzum's "Aske" can really compare with this awesome album in my opinion.
This increasing popularity really showed itself in Wacken - there were REALLY many people wearing Immortal T-shirts (almost as many as Blind Guardian T-shirts). It is still a mystery to me, why Immortal only got to play for 45 minutes! That was way too short for such a great band - but as I will explain in the following it was a great 45 minutes! This was my first Immortal concert, so I was very excited about seeing Abbath and company in action.
So how was it to hear the songs of Blashyrkh played live? It was great - I was completely blown away by the extreme Nordic tunes coming from the speakers. The concert highlights were definitely when they played One by One, Sons Of Northern Darkness and Tyrants (the first three tracks on the "Sons Of Northern Darkness" album). These are such great songs, and are also between my favorites on that album. Immortal played them very close to the versions on the album - and no, that is not a bad thing! I had really hoped to hear Battles In The North and Mountains Of Might (both from "Battles In The North" album), but unfortunately they didn't play any of them. But then again, how many songs can you play in only 45 minutes?
All three members were very tight and convincing and played completely without errors - I heard none anyway. Also the sound was one of the best I heard coming out of the Black Stage's speakers - it was really great.
I don't know what I had expected of Immortal's show on the scene - maybe something with heavy evil Nordic weapons - but there was no such thing. Abbath (vocals and guitar) and Iscariah (bass) just stood there almost motionless (except for their hands of course) and looked evil, while Horgh skillfully played the fast drums that are so characteristic for Immortal's music. They were all (needless to say :) wearing spiky black clothes and white face paint.
There was a great atmosphere at the Black Stage during the whole concert, and the crowd was really enjoying themselves. Some people quickly found out that Immortal was a bit too extreme for their taste and left. But of course the real fans stayed and enjoyed one of the best metal concerts I have ever experienced. I believe this was the best concert at Wacken 2002!
