Band profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

My name is Jack Roger Olsen and I`m the guitarist, composer and prime motor of Highland Glory! :)

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

The band was formed in spring 2001 when our previous band Phoenix Rizing split up. We had just changed singer and changed the bandname too and Highland Glory was born. :) I`ve known Jan Thore since the days of Phoenix Rizing and we`ve always wanted to do something together, and got the opportunity when it didn`t work with our previous band anymore, after having released 2 albums.

It`s hard to pick out any highlights as we`ve only tourd around Norway so far, but of course some gigs are more memorable than others! :) I guess having the pleasure of Mark Wilkinson doing our albums artwork is a a personal highlight for me, being a huge Marillion fan! :) And also supporting Fish in Oslo this autumn on the Return To Childhood tour! :) But I hope the real highlights of our career lies ahead! ;)

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

I`m still wondering about that! :) To be dead honest, we`ve reached that age when most bands who make it big would have done so, we`ll still give it a shot and see how far it can take us. I`m confident we have the potential, absolutely, but the problem is that we don`t have a management or a booking agency etc...all the right people to push you forward in this business, which is really crucial.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

Our latest album is Forever Endeavour, and you should buy it because it`s an album of well crafted songwriting skills filled with catchy songs with classics stamped all over them...in my humble opinion. ;) Well, it`s a very varied melodic metal album, well above the average, with a signature sound.

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

Think I already did that!? :) Guess you could call us melodic traditional power metal, as we are influenced by both the traditional and power metal bands. We play what is natural for us, this is our blend of the music we all like.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

Most gigs are quite memorable, yet the gigs in a place called Bagn tend to stick out as we have a enthusiastic audience above the average there.

How is the writing process in the band?

I come up with the material along with Jan Thore and Lars Andre, but Knut and Morten also particilate in arranging them into songs.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

None of us are professional musicians, we do have day jobs unfortunately, but I guess this was our destiny. I guess when you grow up you don`t choose this lifestyle, it chooses you. :)

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

My all time favourite bands are IRON MAIDEN, MARILLION and RUNNING WILD!

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

No regrets so far, I wish the first album we did as Phoenix Rizing would have a better production and that we could have had more time to think about arrangements, apart from that I`m totally satisfied with both Highland Glory albums! There may always be small details you may have done different, but on the whole I`m very pleased yes! :)

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

No I do love them all myself too. :)

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

It`s quite important, but I guess the music is absolutely more important in this genre.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

It`s unfair and always will be.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

I don`t think it will be possible to fight that unfortunately but I hope the people who really care about their music go out and buy what they really feel is worth having.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Life is Forever Endeavour! :)

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Waking up, hurry off to work, hurry home, spend time with my wife and kids or off to rehearsal. :)

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

My family and good friends. I enjoy every moment off work! :)

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

The craziest thing has yet to happen! :) Well, some crazy things have happened but those are of a nature it`s most wise not to tell! ;)

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Only 3 albums?! Well one album of each of my favourite band - Iron Maiden : Somewhere In Time, Marillion : Seasons End and Running Wild : Death Or Glory!

Movies? That`s easy - The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy!

What is your favourite joke?

? :)

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

- To tour as much as possible to promote the album, and hopefully grow commercially!

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

- I wish to send a greeting to all of you passionate about metal out there and hope you will check out our albums! Cheers, take care!

All the best, Jack - Highland Glory
