The Darkness - One Way Ticket To Hell and Back
The always difficult album number 2!!

"One Way ticket to Hell and Back" is a very successful follower to Darkness' mega successful "Permission to Land". I even dare to say that though it lacks the same obvious hits as the debut, it is a better album. This album is far more consistent with no fillers and a better production from producer Roy Thomas Baker, who beefed up Darkness' sound to suit the well written songs.

Darkness is founded somewhere between Queen and AC/DC. While a lot of critics seem to compare them to Queen I would say that "One Way ticket To Hell and Back" inclines more towards AC/DC - just listen to Is it just me.

The highlight of the album is the amazing mixture of AC/DC's rocky riffs and Queen's love for bombastic anthems in the epic Bald. Darkness has added their own touch as well and the lyrics are only lyrics that Darkness can write since they deal with men's baldness. The song is like no other song on "Permission to land" and underlines the mature growth and development of the band.

Seemed like a Good Idea is this album's Love is only a feeling and is for sure going to be the next single. Dinner Lady Arms is another highlight of the album.

Justin Hawkins and his British companions have made an album that deserves focus on the actual music instead of the ridiculous spandex and falsetto. This is great - no frills - good time Rock 'n' Roll with unpretentious lyrics.

While the fashion led music critics may lack the humour and simple love of the riff to appreciate this album, anyone who enjoys the simple princleples of done with flair and personality will get a kick from this.

Packed full of short, sharp songs, this collection show The Darkness have song writting skills to progress into a truley unique band. While the first album was like a forgetten classic from the hard rock seventies this album pushes us into uncharted territories, whilst mantaining a sense of identity.

"Girl with the Hazel Eyes" is the perfect example. Mandolins, bagpipes, celtic melody, twin guitars, insanely catchy chorus, all delevied in about 3 minutes and with an ease that suggests future releases could push the envelope even further.

"Girlfriend" combines a Status Quo riff with a horn section, an orchestra and a pop chorus to die for.

With momments that recall AC/DC, Queen, Sparks,Forigner this album points towards a bright future.

They may lose some of the fair weather fans that bought their debut on the strength of "I beleive in a thing called love" but should retain the fan base that always saw something very special in the Hawkins brothers.
