An update from Vivien Lalu:

"I finished my work for Hubi Meisel's third album and I will now concentrate on my own stuff during 2006/2007. We'll be able to enter the studio for the next LALU album only during summer 2006, so it's probably around Winter 2006/2007 that the CD will become available. During the many months to come I cannot stay without doing anything, so I decided to finally release a debut for Shadrane. It won't be Neurastasia yet (I get many messages about this album, but it ask too many work to complete right now) but another concept which will be revealed soon, as well as the lineup. Thanks for your time and talk with you soon"

Band profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

Vivien Lalu, "leader" (kuz' it's my project) and of course. Keyboardzzz.

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

I have been composing two times for a German vocalist called Hubi Meisel. I got a little promotion and I felt it was also time for me to use my music as "bumper" for my own career. ONIRIC METAL was meant to introduce my work to the public, at least in a different way that Hubi's albums did. Nobody told me what to do, how to do, it was a true work of freedom.

So I contacted the friends and musicians that I wanted to feature, plus I asked Martin LeMar to make the lyrics and the vocals.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

Nope, because I was already working with LION MUSIC when I started this project out. I knew this stuff would be released.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

Well my "latest" is also my debut, so I guess people should buy it if they are curious to discover a new prog' artist. Dunno.

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

Progressive metal. Of course I did and still play many different styles, it just don't matter, only music that sounds good to my ears matters.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

I don't know. It's a project, not a band, and we've been working so far away from each other that I really don't know what to answer.

How is the writing process in the band?

Well I am just composing everything since it's my ego project. I'm using session players for realising what I can't do myself. I'd say it starts with my keyboard and I use it to compose the parts of every musician and I send them after a while, so they have to perform these ideas in studio etc.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

It's what my parents did, but they threw everything away, so I thought it was a shame and I'm now trying to "save" the name of my family in music. I love to do music, I've been surrounded by music since my mum' was playing keys in a 70's prog band, when I was in her belly. So I can say I really got a love for prog music since I was born. Even before!!! It's of course the only thing I want to do in my life, and the only path through life besides music would be having a daily job to live better, but I can't even consider this. I'd feel too much like a caged animal.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

Yes of course I have! In music I would say Devin Townsend, for movies Jim Carrey and books? Michael Moorcock.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

It's too early to answer since released a debut only few months ago. Time will tell. Fortunately, there will be nothing I regret.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

Potboy: The Final Fantasy. Everybody seem to like it but I find it boring at times, in fact I never listen to it.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

I'm not interested into lyrics. In fact, I never read any lyrics from CD's I buy. I'm just in love with the music, I never give a s*** to the lyrics and I leave this side of things to my singer. I also find the lyrics creation process very BORING. Funny, because I also love to write, outside of doing music.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

I don't know, I am not the one who's dealing with the commercial side of things and my album sales so I really don't know what to answer you. I don't know the "business". I just know there's a lot of stuff for everybody (I mean, for everybody's tastes) and today everybody can access any music in the world so every artist has a chance now.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

To make CD packaging and design better, with a reasonable price of course. If people see how the real product blows away, they won't miss it after downloading. Also give more song samples, and albums previews. I was copying the CD's of my friends on tapes before I got a PC, so I guess this "piracy" thing is all bullshit anyway. I also think it helps artists to get a bit more known. Not everything is "black" about this piracy thing IMHO.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

To enjoy every day the best, even if I'd have to spend all my remaining money today. I don't know what will happen tomorrow so I just want to "enjoy the movie as much as possible, before it ends".

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Oki. I wake up at 7:00 AM. I have breakfast with my girlfriend. She leaves for work around 8:00 AM. So I make music till 1:00 PM. I check my mails. I order a sandwich or a pizza. I do music till 6. I check my mails. Girlfriend is back. I cook. We eat, spend some time together. During the evening she's playing video games so I'm eventually playing with her, or we're looking at a movie, or messing on MSN with friends. I go to sleep around eleven/midnight. And start again like the beginning of the paragraph.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

Of course, spend time with my fiancée, but also movies (all the time there is one running in the background), video games and role-playing games.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

I never toured. THAT is the most crazy thing.

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Albums: SymphonyX - V, Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine and Lalu - Oniric Metal (of course).

Movies: The Ninth Gate, Starsky & Hutch - The Movie (for the humor part), and of course, a porno movie if I really have to stay two years alone (hahaha).

Oh yes, I forgot about the books. That would be Dungeons & Dragons; the player guide, the dungeon master guide and the monster manual. So I could play with myself.

What is your favourite joke?

This one (I'm a French man but I find it brilliant). Open google.com (English version). Type 'french military victories' in the search area and click on the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button. Google will tell you that he found nothing about the french military victories but will propose you a link to a reformulated request, "French military defeats". Follow the link and you will laugh your ass off. My favourite part is still: "French Revolution: Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.". Amazing.

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Be able to release a follow-up to my debut and that people like it more than the previous one.

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

Thanks YOU. Well I would say, if you heard my debut, thousand thanks for checking me out and I hope you liked it, and if not, well, you've been pretty crazy to read this all. See you.
