Band profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

Hi, my name is Rolf and I`m the guitar player of GUN BARREL.

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

It began in late 1999. I was looking for new musicans and found some for a classical rock line up. Dirty rock with the brutal name GUN BARREL. All the members were people of the local cologne szene. We recorded a demo (Bomb Attck) and an EP (Back to suicide). Later on we got the deal with Limb Music Products, Hamburg. Our first highlight. So we went on. Two CD`s: "Power-Dive" and "Battle-tested" with great reviews worldwide. Many gigs here in germany and in other countries.
Wacken/Rockstation/Headbangers Open Air and and and.......
Now our new CD "Bombard your soul" is just released with best reviews we ever had and the best line up we ever had.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

Oh yes, in the early years, cause we play no Nu Metal or other modern trend. We were very happy as we saw that our music found fans worldwide.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

Our new album "Bombard your soul" is just released on the 28th of october 2005 .
People should buy it because we play our own music with a special strength and a big fun. And if people want to feel free, enjoy a drink, make party - in this case we are the right stuff. If people love good lyrics and powerfull hymns and ballads they should also buy the record. Yiu see - no good reason to leave it in the stores!

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

We play Rocknrollmetal. A clear thing. We will never try to play another kind of music. This music is GUN BARREL and we don`t need other styles. This music is the best for us.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

All our adventures are great stories for a book "Life on the road" ,all the people we meet were own special moments to take part. I think the concerts in WACKEN, the summerevent in Turkey and the Headbangers Open Air with our new singer were a great time.

How is the writing process in the band?

It `s me who is making the songs. I have many ideas for new songs. If I think a song may be ready I drive to our working room and we look together if the song is ready or we need more riffs or refrains. That`s all. So a song can be a banging first shot - some times a song never leaves the barrel.(hehe!).

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

Music is a passion. You never stop and it never stops. I heard the Stones and Hendrix and so I found the passion.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

Lemmy, Ozzy, Phil Lynott, Paul Kossoff(Free), Paul Rodgers, mony others, an endless list of maniacs.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

Oh yes, there were some gigs where we got no money and we had many problems in these times. All the albums and songs we made and played were ok for times we recorded and performed it. Nothing to regret... I fear?!

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

Ok - that's difficult. If you play the favourite ones, lets say: your banger there may come the point when you are bored about this successful song and this is for sure human. But when you look in the eyes of the audiencd see/feel/hear them singing with you - on this point it's over and suddenly you know why they love it and you love it.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

Xaver, our new singer, writes diaries with his lyrics. We talk together about our adventures, our fears, feelings and so on. Xaver makes a song out of it. So I think with our new album we have the best lyrics we ever had because all songs are a part of us.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

It's the business-side of our enthusiastic way of life -lets say the dark side. The ting is: live and let live. It`s a big business and end of the day everybody has to pay his rent. Nothing works without money but money shouldn't rule and rob one of the last emontional things in life: the music.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

.to be honest: no good idea. I think it's a way in the middle: allow something as an apetiser and make people buy an album. How to handle this - sorry - I am a musican and no businessman!?

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Oh yes, take an aim in the focus and go for it! But you have to be patient with you and the world around you.nothing is done in a daytime - even god needed 7 days to create the world!

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

I stand up very early, hair washing (very important for my ego), the mirror look..nice guy, you can go out and meet the world..
First: doing my job and than playing guitar, no ideas?!? I watch a film (Splatter or horror), then I take the guitar once again, no ideas?!? I phone up my friends, look for new gigs , phoning with organizers, take the guitar, make some riffs and fall asleep.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

I like to travel, I`m no home boy. I`m always on the run. Find adventures outdoor. Look what`s going on in our town or driving with my cars to other places.
Shopping new rocknroll clothes is also a great hobby for me.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

We took Schmier's limited bass guitar (Destruction) with us in our equiment after we left the stage in WACKEN. Schmier and all the people around him thought the guitar was stolen. It was a catastrophe behind the Wacken stage, everybody was seeking the damned bass guitar and we laid backstage asleep, hehe......Oh ,it was a so painfull but it was only a rotten mistake.

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Books - Charles Bukowski-The man with the leatherbag
Stiff Chainey - The best rocknroll band of the world
Lemmy - In his own words

CD`s - Thin Lizzy - Black Rose
In Flames - Colony
Motorhead - Ace of spades

Movies: Texas Chainsaw massacre
Thin Lizzy - Live and dangerous
House of thousand corpes

What is your favourite joke?

. a woman is coming at the doctors...

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

We have many new song ideas and we plan to start with songwriting this december Next year we are recording the new CD and we will play live,live,live..

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

Salute to all the RevelationZ readers. Gun Barrel wishes you all the best, long hair, some beer and a rocknroll life till the end. Have fun with our music!

Hope to see you
