Events and Reports - Bloodbath - Live at Wacken Open Air 2005
Bloodbath was without a doubt my number one reason to go to Wacken this year. And during the show it was pretty obvious that I was not the only one who felt that way. It seems that a lot of people came to Wacken for Bloodbath's first live show and the only one ever with Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt. And there's a good reason for that. There are few singers out there, if any, who can match the incredible growls and screams of mr. Åkerfeldt. Not to mention the band backing him up. In their own words: "Bloodbath is no longer only a tribute to death metal; it's death metal's very own elite". So you'd be out of your mind to miss this show, right?
And so, Bloodbath entered the stage and the crowd went crazy! They were all wearing white t-shirts that were torn and smeared in blood or something like that. I'm sure everybody know this feeling when one of your favorite bands enter a stage and get ready to play and you tell yourself: "this is real, they are actually here." This was the feeling I had as they came in, and on top of that I knew that this was a once in a lifetime concert. First and last show with Mikael Åkerfeldt. If you weren't here, you will never see Bloodbath live with this lineup.
First surprise was when they started playing. I immediately recognized Cancer of the Soul, but damn, the volume was low! I was all the way in the front, right in front of Mike, but still I had trouble actually hearing the band. And when Mike started singing, I couldn't hear him for all the people around me singing. It was great to hear so many good singers around me everybody seemed to know the lyrics, but I was there for Bloodbath! And I almost couldn't hear Mike! What the fuck??? I don't mind that they turn the volume down so that my ears don't continue singing after the concert, but this was just not loud enough! This also resulted in the the audience shouting "Louder! Louder!" between the songs. What a shame. But apart from the volume, the sound was ok, all instruments could be heard and when people didn't sing too loud, I could also hear Mike's amazing voice! At least this got a little better later in the concert and they turned him a bit up. Not enough, but better, nonetheless.
The band looked like they were enjoying the show as much as we were. They had a lot of energy and gave all they had. For those who have seen Opeth live, they know that Mike is a very down to earth frontman and this was also true for his appearence with Bloodbath. When he talked to the audience, he talked in a very deep and calm voice, even his jokes were told this way. And he *did* have some of those. Like mentioning that they had had some trouble doing the laundry. But he certainly did have the audience in his hand. Sometimes between the songs when we were all growling like crazy, he would just say "Low" and we would all growl our deepest and meanest growls. Then he would say "High" and we all screamed our heads off. He did this several times between songs and the last time, after the high-part, he said "Dani Filth" and we all did our best Dani Filth scream. Just hillarious.
After a few songs, I noticed that there was something wrong with Dan Swano's guitar. It turned the wrong way. When I looked closer, I saw that he was playing a right-hand guitar but he was left-handed. Not the Jimi Hendrix way with a right-hand guitar setup lefthanded, no, he actually had a totally normal right hand guitar and played it left-handed with normal string setup. How the fuck do you do that??? And why? I'm sure it gives him his very own style of playing, but damn, some things must be much more difficult to play.
The concert ended with a song from Nightmares made Flesh, which I guess is influenced about the story about the german cannibal a few years back. For some reason Eaten seems to be a big hit, though it's probably my least favorite Bloodbath song. For a long time I skipped that song, when I put the cd on. But the audience were screaming for it. Later I found out that in the end, they had two songs left, Eaten and Cry My Name but only time left for one. I would have chosen Cry My Name anytime, but Eaten is certainly a crowd pleaser with a very catchy chorus.
Now when I look back, I know it's a concert that I will remember for a long time. I have listened to those Bloodbath cds so many times now, so finally seeing the band live was just (almost) perfect! Besides the classic complaint "But they didn't play all their songs!", the only thing that was wrong was the low volume. I mean, this is not a Britney Spears concert, we actually come to hear the band play their music live! Still, Bloodbath put on a good live show, and it's easy to see that even though this was Bloodbath's first live show ever, the musicians all had plenty of live experience. There is a reason why this is called a supergroup. It also worked very well that both guitarists had microphones and growled in the background. Apart from the added vocals, it also looks pretty cool on stage. For all those who didn't get to see the concert, go buy the dvd ASAP when it comes out, ok? 'cause this was a damn good show!

Comment by Anders ex-Revelationz (Anonymous) - Tuesday, September 13, 2005 | Yes, this concert was absoultely fantastic. It is easily in my top 3 favorite concert list. I stood about 15 meters behind Tajs, and I think the sound here was ok. The fact that this was a unique concert with Åkerfeldt on vocals made this concert even more unforgettable. I guess you should have been there \m/ |
