Events and Reports - Lordi - Live with Virgin Sin at The Rock, Copenhagen - April 29th, 2005
Virgin Sin
Virgin Sin is a Swedish act with a pretty strange visual appearance. The band, which was formed in 1983, and is said to be one of the first Swedish Black Metal acts, consist of Dagon - Vocals, SS66 - guitar, Zoak - Bass and Schreck - drums.
On stage these guys look pretty outrageous: Dagon has the traditional Black Metal painted face, clad all in leather, SS66 looks like something that escaped from an S&M club, with his zipped latex mask, and Zoak appears like someone cloned Nikki Sixx with Marilyn Manson. A very strange combination of egos, and the crazy thing is that this diversity, which at first can appear as confusion, somehow is mirrored in the music.
Blending influences from classic Metal, in particular Judas Priest, with a touch of Hard Rock and a tad of Black Metal, the band's style appear as original, which in itself should be cherished.
On the show side, the band's sense for the dramatic shined through in a fine way, reminding me a little of acts like Notre Dame. With simple means, Virgin Sin managed to create a dark, horror-ish atmosphere. The music surely has it's great moments and got quite a few heads banging!
The performance was dominated by a rough energy, and gave a feeling that these guys really believed in their own stuff. Self confident and enthusiastic.
The music came across as rough, unpolished and full of Metal attitude. There was some kind of underground feeling to the band, as they stood there, dressed in black leather and spikes all over.
An enjoyable experience of a fine band, delivering a good, entertaining show!
Lordi
I saw Lordi for the first time a few years ago at the Wacken Open Air, where I didn't know the band in advance. I was slightly disappointed, expecting something more, some kind of wild and wicked show, but the band seemed very still-standing and nothing really grabbed my attention. Since then, I have listened to their music, and have come to enjoy their party Rock, and tonight I really hoped to get another experience out of the gig. Unfortunately my impression of not-enough-action has not changed radically. A band with such a notorious image, that immediately draws attention, has all chances of doing something wild, fun, anything to make people remember them after the show.
Already from the first note of the opener, Bring It On, it was evident that Lordi had suffered from a mild cold. He sounded a bit hoarse, and it also shines through, that his main focus is on masks and monster show, and not on being a musician. Several times during the show, he made small mistakes, and in general, his musical presentation is only just approved, nothing more.
The band appears extreme in visional appearance, but not in attitude or behavior, which leaves me with an incomplete feeling. The surroundings are cool, the costumes impressive and the stage is set for something wild to happen.and then it's like it never really does!
It's clearly Lordi himself who has a passion for this sort of entertainment, but actually I found the best performances came from Enary on keyboard and Amen on guitar. Enary seemed like a fish in the water, big smile on her face, seemingly enjoying the experience extremely much. Amen was moving around the most, seemed more alive and put an effort into his performance, I was missing from the rest.
During Pet The Destroyer some of the show I have been missing was delivered. Lordi came onstage wielding a huge, realistic chainsaw and wearing some sort of skin mask, creating a sort of Texas Chainsaw Massacre mood. Very cool!
Of course, Lordi's strength is the extremely catchy songs, and I couldn't help jumping up and down and sing along to tracks like the groovy Rock The Hell Outa You or their best song Blood Red Sandman. My Heaven Is Your Hell worked great as a party starter as well!
The show was closed in great fashion, with the monster hit all had been waiting for: Would You Love A Monsterman, which sent the crowd into maniacs!
That the concert was a positive experience for me, is due to the songs alone, and unfortunately not the performance itself. I really like the catchy, hard rocking songs, but Lordi's voice was a bit out of shape, the band didn't appear as very tight or creating any kind of enthusiastic atmosphere.
This leads me to the conclusion, that I would prefer Lordi without the costumes, if that could in any way improve their creativity performance wise. I like their music, and though the image is an eye catcher, it remains an empty shell with not enough filling for me.

Hellishly worth going to see their shows, and prety easy to get backstage if you know the trick.

I can't think of any decent musician i know who considers these guys as musicians! The singing is awefull and in most cases so bad he doesn't even accieve what most amateurs on the european summer-circuit do. The guitar-playing is hilarious as you're never really sure if it's a playback-show cause he's actually doesn't play the guiter, or because he's not good enough to make it sound :-)
Anyway, the only guy in the whole group who actually does something is the drummer but he doesn't seem to enjoy himself a whole lot. Maybe because the rest of the group doesn't seem to know how to keep it together...
His statement after the eurosong was pretty sad. A great day for openmind-ness? Bullocks...you raped every last bit of rock&roll that ever had a change in eurosong. The ultimate proof that eurosong hasn't been about the music for over 10 years now...bring in the rental-suits and buy a Hendrix-album, losers...

The guitarplayer either has the weirdest tuning ever, or his delay was plugged backwards :-) The guy should play trombone or something else with not to many knobs and switches. (If he has some disability that prevents him from moving his fingers, i obviously appologies for this comment. If not, please someone convince him he used to be the drummer but the other bandmembers slip him with drugs every night so not to remember it...actually doesnt sound so strange,uh?)
BTW: might wanna try watching the mupped show. Some of you really dont know how to act hey...
