Events and Reports - U.D.O. - Live with Majesty in Vega, Copenhagen, October 5th 2004
Written by Nina

Majesty opened tonight's Metal party, and though I think that their music is generic, unoriginal and sub standard, they were better live than on record. Well, I had no expectations at all, except for maybe to get a little laugh out of it, so that might explain why I actually managed to get some kind of positive experience out of the show. The otherwise hoarse and not very melodic singer, Tarek "MS" Maghary did sound better in a live situation, and the band managed to play a tight and pretty enthusiastic show. But just like on the albums, Majesty used the same gimmicks over and over, they moved in the same way throughout the show, and the songs sounded very alike.
My personal highlights were Into The Stadiums and Sword And Sorcery, the songs I can see at least some quality in, whereas Heavy Metal Battlecry fell flat with it's repetitive and unoriginal structure.
I can imagine, if one went into the concerthall with a positive impression in mind, one would not be disappointed in Majesty's performance, because they acted passionately, and carried their music out well.

Now came the time for the real star of tonight: UDO! The air was thick with excitement, as the mixed crowd, counting all sorts of people from young newcomers to Metal to old Accept supporters, moved closer to the stage. Silence filled the hall for one short moment, before the atmospheric intro started, and from the first note of Thunderball, the crowd went crazy!

Dressed in full army outfit (with matching warm socks and the sweat running from his face!), UDO showed us, that though he is an aged gentleman, he still knows how to deliver a high-calibre show, skilfully performed and full of attitude!
A fine mix of Accept classics and UDO-songs made up the setlist, some of my faves being Metal Heart, I'm A Rebel and Holy. There was also room for a couple of surprises, like Midnight Highway and Love Child, it's cool that UDO puts a little effort into making the concert a bit more unpredictable.

The stage performance of the energetic singer was enthusiastic, with a close contact to the audience, keeping the eye contact with lots of people in the front rows. Touching the stretched out hands of the crazy crowd and making funny faces at us, also helped break down the barrier between the stage and the crowd. People responded greatly, they screamed along to all songs, jumping up and down and really showed their support!
The band worked very well, and supported the charismatic star of the show in a good way, though I wasn't totally impressed by the somehow simple guitar solo.

Udo still possesses the personal and highly powerful voice, that has left deep marks on the Metal world, there's no way he has lost some of his power with age, as it happens to so many other singers!
Many times towards what we thought to be the end of the show, the band went out of stage, just to reappear again and again for encores, and the concert lasted for about two hours! When Balls To The Wall was performed in a majestic manner, I thought the show was over, but they kept coming back for more, seemingly enjoying the show as much as the fans!
This was a great Heavy Metal night in the company of a living legend, who showed us, that quality Metal doesn't get rusty with time!

Once again, Europe gets all of the killer concerts. Udo hasn't been here to California, with either Accept or with UDO, in close to 20 years. It sounds like it was a killer show. I suppose I'll have to be content to live vicariously through you!
