There is no doubt that these guys are seasoned musicians, not to mention that they are obviously savvy in the studio with this four track promo being above demo quality, in fact, this is not a demo at all, it's literally up to par with master quality material. With a sound that combines
Parallels/Perfect Symmetry era
Fates Warning along with edgy aggression of early Jag Panzer,
The Abyss Below showcases these guys, in full force, making one want more than just these four cuts; quite impressive.
There is the double bass drums, riff driven guitar/bass, and melodic vocals that round out the tight groove that encompasses the band;
"The Gray Monk" probably rounds the most groove driven cut, with it's start/stop syncopated rhythms and time signature changes. The title track encompasses a dark glistening chorus laden guitar lead, giving the opener it's haunting vibe, obviously complimenting the complete crunch found within the aggressive
"Species Net," and the trippy atmosphere of
"Pangs of Hope"
In the end, it would be good to hear more material from these guys, but within these four songs here, many sides of the band are represented, a rare feat for many, until then these four will have to do.
