George Lynch grew up idolizing Jimi Hendrix plus
Jeff Beck and their huge impact on guitar playing. Lynch started to play
Los Angeles clubs in the late seventies and his breakthrough came when he joined Dokken. Lynch has been one of the most influential guitarists in the eighties.
This album has probably been important since
George Lynch gets a chance to pay kudos to some of his inspirations. Lynch is still a fantastic player even though he reached 50 years of age. The extensive guitar solos on this cover album proves that he still sparkles on the six-string.
"Furious George" has varied styles with
George Lynch putting his own signature on the solos and guitar work through the entire CD. It is pretty cool to hear
George Lynch capture the bluesy feel of
I Ain't Superstitious and his slide playing on
You Shook me. Other highlights are Lynch's crunchy guitar playing on
Space Station #5 and the emotional vibe on
Bridge of Sighs. Lynch uses some really cool effects on his guitar and captures a cool 60's sound, not far from Hendrix's psychedelic sound.
A major plus is Kelly Keeling from Baton Rouge, M.S.G. etc providing vocals for the album. Keelings vocals combined with Lynch's extravagant playing is a perfect combo. Keeling shines on
Stormbringer where he sings both Coverdale's and Glenn Hughes' parts.
All in all a pretty good album from Lynch. Personally I am a bit tired of all the cover albums and anxiously await a new
George Lynch/Lynch Pilson/Lynch Mob album with new material. It seems like Mascot Records/Sharpnel mass produces these cover albums in an un-charming assembly line fashion. Like on Kevin DuBrow's cover album "In for the Kill" - released a few months prior to Lynch on Mascot/Sharpnel - Jeff Martin, Gunter Nezhoda and Kevin Curry make up the backing band.
"Furious George" underlines that Lynch is a fantastic guitarist, but everyone knew that before - so this release is the run of the mill for a Lynch fan, including myself.
