Events and Reports - Edguy - Live with Nocturnal Rites & Tad Morose, Kåren, Gothenburg, Sweden - May 6th, 2004
Written by Nina

After a cool day, hanging out in Sweden, drinking beer and discussing Metal in the good company of Steen, I found myself standing in line outside the concerthall, Kåren in Gothenburg. Being a very big Edguy fan and having only had the possibility to witness them at festivals, I was looking forward to tonight's concert eagerly. Judging from the size of the queue, I wasn't the only one, actually it seemed endless! Well, people wouldn't have needed to show up this early, because only 20 minutes before the concert was announced to begin, we were permitted to enter the hall!
With happiness in our eyes, we entered the huge concerthall, and started looking for the bar. This proved to be a difficult task, and after searching for a place to buy some more beer, and asking a guard for the bar, we got the shock of the day, when we were being told, that we couldn't buy beer at all! In Sweden, it is forbidden to buy beer for people under 18, and as there were people down to 14 of age present at this gig, they wouldn't take the chance of selling beer at the concerthall! Apart from that, smoking was only allowed at a tiny outdoor yard! Choking!

The first band, Tad Morose, entered the stage a little later than announced, probably due to the huge amount of people who were still standing in line outside. Unfortunally I don't know this cool band very well, but it seems they sound somehow alike to one of my fave bands, LeFay, a more progressive and dark, atmospheric version of Power Metal. Very good! The overall impression was even harder to judge, due to a rather muddy sound. Too bad, because they sounded really good, especially when they played one song, I could recognize, Ethereal Soul!

After Tad Morose, it was time for Nocturnal Rites to show what they are made of. As an owner of two of their albums, The Sacred Talisman and Afterlife, I belong to those who prefer their older material, and wasn't overly exited about tonight's show. But I was really surprised, what a performance! They were really energetic on stage, the singer, Jonny Lindkvist, was like a wild animal, and put all his soul into the music, inspiring the audience to bang their heads and sing loud! And we got as much as three songs from The Sacred Talisman, The Iron Force, Eternity Holds and Glorious, very satisfying to me! A worthy support to Edguy!

And then.the real reason for my presence tonight, the fantastic, melodic, incredible heroes.Edguy!! The stage was decorated with a backdrop with skeleton like figures, and was almost like a complete concept from their newest opus, Hellfire Club, and with simple measures, we were suddenly in the world of Edguy. Under The Moon, one of the best tracks from the new record, served as a brilliant opener, and at once I was swept away to another world. I have read later on, that Tobias Sammet complained that the stage was too small, and I believe that, after having witnessed the energy he showed, I'll just say that after two songs the sweat was running from him badly, and when he took on a bandana, my guess is it wasn't only to look cool (because it doesn't, hehe!) but to stop the sweat from running into his eyes! The short guy ran around like crazy and the band was very energetic and seemed happy to play for us tonight, which of cause always helps create a more wild and enthusiastic atmosphere!

The setlist was good too, though I would have liked to hear more from my fave album, Theater Of Salvation, we got two songs, The Headless Game and Fallen Angels, and personally I would have preferred Babylon instead of the last mentioned, as I know they have done on some shows of this tour. But overall they had chosen wisely among their great songs. Some highlights were The Piper Never Dies, which rocked extremely well live, and Navigator, a song that bids you to jump as high as possible, which I did! The hyper melodic Vain Glory Opera was also a great treat tonight!

Tobias Sammet had a good dialog with the audience and there's no complaining about the contact between band and fans!
The guitarists, Dirk Sauer and Jens Ludwig involved themselves a lot in the show, and delivered a good background choir, which provided more of the multi-layer-vocals feeling we know from the records. All in the entire band worked like a tight unit.
This glorious night ended with Out Of Control as encore, a great ending where everybody in the hall screamed along!

If you get the chance to see Edguy live, catch it!
