Well, these guys from
Chicago are a prime example of the ever so growing mainstream metal plethora straying away from the "rapping" to concentrate on more positive issues, such as the musicianship, and I'll be damned if these guys don't make it in the American mainstream hard rock/metal scene soon and get a record deal, oh, and yes, the kids will love 'em.
Being in the same league as bands like Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Nickelback, 40 Grit, and AFI, perfect for all non-rap listening suburban American teenagers. They tend to be heavy, with thick emphasis on guitar riffs, providing the occasional Sabbath influence to be present, with occasional solos to fill the metallic edge. Vocally, Joe Signore is the typical baritone voiced angst-ridded singer, who sings lyrics of Christian inspired beliefs, concentrating on more hope inspiring concepts, which is so much better than hearing shit like "lets shoot some heroine" or "life sucks, kill, kill." These beliefs reflect forward in songs like the heavily infused
"Thoughts of Christ" and the groove of
"No Evil," while other cuts such as the dark ballad
"Child Lost" and near stoner tempo of
"Right, Wrong, and in Between" offer the Torn's diversity within their songwriting skills. The production quality on this record is also very well done, dark sounding, if you must, the low end tends to rumble, not for timid woofers.
It may not be the cup of tea for metalheads, but these guys have their shit together, and they make good for the mainstream, and we should not stop them in that process. So fans of Mainstream Hard Rock/Metal should dare not pass this one up (see bands listed above).
