Events and Reports - Evergrey - Live At Train, Aarhus - March 25th, 2004
Written by Tommy

It was exactly 145 days since I saw Evergrey the last time, which were at Aalborg Metal Festival where they delivered a great show. I guess this short tour in Denmark could be seen as a chance to get a set worked together for their upcoming U.S. dates, promoting their new album The Inner Circle due on April 26.
And while talking about that new album we were treated with a song from it in More Than Ever, being a really hard track with some mean guitar riffing, hard to judge by one listen but I had a positive first impression.

Apart from that one new song the setlist was made up of songs also played the last time I saw them, with the exception of the cover I'm Sorry, a soft track that gets a fitting dose of the special Evergrey sound.
Unfortunately the band had to wrestle with many sound problems this night, Tom's guitar apparently didn't sound the way he had hoped for and Henrik had many troubles just to get his saying anything at all, with more or less successful replacements (and re-replacements) of guitars that lasted for more than the first half of the show, not optimal conditions I must add.

The fast opener Blinded set things in motion and End Of Your Days worked very well live, featuring an intriguing keyboard solo and a very hard bass approach, cool stuff.

A big part of the set featured song from the In Search Of Truth album: The magnificent Rulers Of The Mind with a great lead section from Tom, the atmospheric and dark Mark Of The Triangle, the fast and bombastic The Masterplan and The Encounter having a great mellow guitar solo from Henrik all worked out quite good.

The band will do well in keeping Recreation Day in the setlist, it's not only a huge song it also presents itself extremely well live. The extraordinary heavy start followed by a completely down to earth tempo is just a really cool treat, as goes for the nice piano melody and catchy chorus.

Nosferatu and Solitude Within represented an earlier period in the bands history, both hard songs shrouded in melancholy. The technical drumming in Solitude Within was really top notch; on the other hand Tom missed a few vocal lines.

In what could be described as something extra we got a short instrumental part with some moody keys and a laid-back guitar solo from Henrik, not over the top but pretty good.

I would have liked them to experiment a bit with some other and also older songs (haven't heard any from their debut yet), and a sound check would probably have corrected some of the technical problems too.

Anyway the band did pretty well even though they weren't exactly on fire, the audience numbering around 100-150 more or less secluded individuals was no turn on either.
This was one of those concert were I got to hear some great and well performed songs and then not much more than that, leaving you with a funny mixed feeling, I guess decent is the word I'm looking for.

Yeah, I agree with your verdict. The concert was good but they didn't seem to be 100% into it. Guess that's because of the lack of an energetic audience. What a shame. I would love to see them when they give all they have in them...

I was there too.
And well I almost wish I had'nt been there.

Evergrey is pretty big on my band list, I like them alot. I.m.h.o. they delivered a poor show, and they fell into to the great pitfall all bands face during theire time. They were disapointed with the turn out, they seemed to have taken a swig or two from the evil bottle too many.

No matter how small or large the crowd is, you always have to deliver, I don't care if there is three people and a dog (Bad News anyone???), you give them a show, and you show them the respect they showed you by buying tickets and showing up. After all the fans are you pay check, no fans, no money.

And the excuse about the guitar not staying in tune, hey Mr Englund that happens with new strings, and you are a professional, this should have been forseen. You endorse theese guitars, Caparisone, so don't blame the guitar, blame you or your tech if you have one. It's not like it's the first or tenth show Evergrey has played.

Mr Danehauge started a solo in the wrong key and decided, other than shaking it off or laughing it iff, it would look better to the fans that he walked off stage, The only thing it made him look like was an ass.

But Danehauge was'nt the only one who walked off stage, both Englund, and the bassplayer went, at one time leaving only the two newer members the drummer and keys.

They did'nt seem tight either, and when you play really tight riffs as Evergrey do, it just dos'nt work, and it make them look verse than it really is. But if you have tight dry riff's with hard clipping, you have to be tight, so that was a bit of shame to listen to...

All in all I was kinda disapointed with Evergreys performence. Last I saw them was Wacken 2002, and in spite of sound problems (theirewireless kept messing up and cutting out.), they delivered a much tighter and better show.
I know that they recently had had some line up changes but still, they are not new to playing live or line up changes for that matter and they just did'nt deliver.

Last note...

Considering how late the concert stated on a thursday, I think the turn out was pretty good, for a Dark Progressive Metal concert in Aarhus.
