Events and Reports - Dragonforce - Release party at The Underworld, London, February the 13th, 2004.
Written by Nina

The release party to present the new album from British Speed Rockers Dragonforce turned out to be more of a regular gig, and despite sound problems, a well performing band and a great atmosphere made this a night to remember!

The sold out club truly was packed, and this turned out to be a typical club gig, with all it's limitations and advantages; no great sound (in fact the gig was plagued by several sound problems), no big stage or room for a real stageshow, no fancy features, but lots of energy, sweat, close contact to other fans, shouting, headbanging, jumping, and this special intimate, intense atmosphere, that makes you feel like being part of something special this night!

As stated before, the show didn't really seem like a release party, meaning that there was no playback of the forthcoming album, no statement or longer presentation of it, no posters of the coverart, etc. They did play one song from the new album, and it sounded promising, but frankly much similar to the material from the first album.

People were waving huge plastic swords and axes in the air, fists filled the sky and the stagediving was wild! Even guitar player Sam Totman decided to join the fun, and stagedived quite a bit while keeping his hands busy with the guitarplaying! People were invited on stage to jump around and act crazy and this night band and fans united for one huge party!

The band played all songs from their debut, Valley Of The Damned, and this rapid, energized, sort of metal usually translates well live, as was also the case tonight. Though the sound left a lot to wish for, the well performing band, and the general atmosphere, managed to transform something that could have been a poor gig into something wild and wicked!

The guitar duo Sam Totman and Herman Li lived up to their reputation as rapid and technically professional guitarplayers, and they looked like a pair of crazy, wild guys on stage as well, going berserk with big smiles on their faces all the time! A special mention goes to Herman Li for his rapid, wicked solos!
Live as on record, my only minor complaint is singer Z.P Theart , whose voice at times seems a little stretched and almost about to break. This is only rare, so I can live with it, as his voice otherwise fits the sound.
Dave Mackintosh from Bal-Sagoth is new man behind the drums and proved he had the skills and speed needed to join Dragonforce.

Though more or less the whole band had some misses here and there the general professional performance and the energy of these guys won me over completely! Several times I found myself jumping up and down in the closely packed crowd, trying to get closer to the stage and singing along from the top of my lungs! This wild enthusiasm surprised even myself, but I sort of got carried away!
Personal highlights were an energypacked version of Revelations, the hard rocking assault of Disciples Of Babylon and the super fast Black Winter Night.

This was a night where atmosphere and a solid performance ruled over technical problems and bad sound, and showed the performance itself will always be what counts!
