Events and Reports - Heavenly - Live at The Underworld, London - February 13th, 2004
Written by Steen

With a flight to London being just as cheap as a train ride to Copenhagen I'd decided to check out a show in London this time, namely the Dragonforce album-release show with Heavenly as support. After listening to the Dragonforce debut a couple of times Nina decided to join me so I had some good company for this 24 hour Power Metal trip. After a cool little warmup party in Aarhus the night before and four hours of sleep I woke Nina by blasting the new Iced Earth album at high volume at 7 in the morning. I cannot imagine a better wakeup call...

Arriving in London we quickly found a decent pub and sat down for some much needed food and a couple of beers. Contacting Sanctuary Records we found out that our interviews with Heavenly and Dragonforce had been postponed till after the shows and we started wondering how our state of mind would be at that time... After a short beer stop at the local supermarket and an accident involving Nina, a cup of coffee, a slippery floor and a big yellow warning cone, we quickly made our way to Camden Town, where we checked out the local marketplace and entered The World's End Pub to warm up for the shows. It is a pub located on top of the venue and the place was pretty packed with people who were obviously there for the shows. Several people came by and asked us if we had any spare tickets as the show was sold out. We soon found some Manowar fans and had quite a sing-a-long...

Half an hour before the show we got down to the sold out venue and made our way as far to the front as possible. The place was really packed! Heavenly started their show a little after 8pm with the intro from Dust to dust. Of course Evil was the first real song of the evening and it blasted away at high speed. At once it was clear that the keyboard was absent and the role had been taken over by the guitars. It gave the music a different, harder vibe which was interesting, but also lost some of the detail. The sound wasn't the best, but it was much better than when I watched Enuff Z'nuff play the same stage three months earlier.

This was Heavenly's first show since their performance at Wacken in 2002, so there were plenty of mistakes and other weird things going on. The absence of the keyboard meant that several songs were cut short. Ben Sotto was a little out of breath and had some trouble keeping up with his performance on the album at times, but the enthusiastic audience helped the band along the way.

The band made up for the somewhat troubled musical performance by doing a pretty entertaining show. It looked like they had fun on stage and the audience reaction was pretty ecstatic in the front rows. Nina wasn't very impressed but I was definitely entertained and sang along to every song, forgetting to notice small details like the bass not working for a couple of songs, oh well...

Besides Evil the band played the infectous Lust for life where I think most of the crowd was jumping up and down. We also got my favorite Riding through hell from the debut, a very cool version of Victory, the title track from their second album, Sign of the Winner and finishing of the show was the epic Kingdom Come. Only about 40 minutes was way too short, but the tight schedule of the venue was apparantly to blame.

Overall a good show plagued by various sound problems.
