Mister Kite will release their second album
Box of Fear on February 18th. This 3 track single gives a little taste of what to expect. Having never heard of the band before I found this a nice surprise.
Mister Kite is hard to categorize. Words like Rock, dark, progressive, melancholic, heavy, emotional and melodic all describe the music, but I'd better wait with a deeper analysis until I hear the full album. Two songs from the forthcoming album and one cover song is included here.
After about 10 listens to this single I got hooked. There is a deep atmosphere within each of the two album songs.
The hunger is a brooding mid-tempo rocker, while
How long turns the speed and heaviness up a notch. The atmosphere in the music is very rich. Deep moody bass lines and grinding guitars lay a good foundation. Keys are used sparsely but at just the right times to enhance the song. The drums are also very well played, giving the music just the right laidback rythm that slowly creeps up on you. Alf Wemmenlind's vocals are full of emotion and add a darker element to the music.
Finishing up the single is a cover Deep Purple's
Bloodsucker. Due to an error in my upbringing I have never heard this song before, so I can't really comment on it in relation to the original. But it's a pretty cool little rocker with some great guitar work, showing the band in a more direct approach.
If you have a little patience then
Mister Kite may be the band that grabs you a doesn't let go. I will wait for their full length album with great anticipation.
