What is your name and your current position in the band?
Tony Martin... I am the boss!!!!!
Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?
Don't have enough paper to tell you all that!!! Here's a brief answer, First I was born, then my parents played stupid songs to me and at the age of 3 I began to like them, then at the age of 7 I got my first band, That was a highlight!
Then I can't remember anything until I was 11 cuz I broke my leg when I fell out of a tree, that was a low light!!! But I recovered to form another band but I can't remember who was in it and then I joined another band with my cousin and did really well with it till I was 18 That was a highlight, then I got married, that was a lowlight!!! Then I got divorced, that was a highlight, then I got another band called Legend. that was a medium light cuz It sort of did ok but never really took off.
Then I started workin in a recording studio and worked with people like Musical Youth and Dexis midnight runners, That was a highlight! Then I worked in a sex shop!!! That was hilarious!!!! Then I joined a band and changed the name to the Alliance, that was a highlight!! We did pretty good with that one... then it broke up, that was a lowlight, then I was asked to join Black Sabbath.. THAT was pretty crucial!!!!!
Then I did 3 albums, that was a highlight, then I got fired, that was pretty low! I got a solo deal with Polydor, that was a high, Then.. Sabbath asked me back again!! That was a high, then I did another 3 albums, that was pretty high although the last one was pretty naff but hey.. Then I got fired again and that was Damn low!!!
Then I ignored the industry completely, got married had another 2 kids to make it 4, built a house got divorced again and THEN. I got my first REAL solo band!!! These are the most amazing guys to be on the road with, I have Geoff Nicholls on keyboards, Our experience and all round good guy that keeps spirits high. Danny Needham on drums, amazing player, very visual, great at making ANY kit work, Also Jamie Mallender on Bass, again an all round good guy with the ability to make the best of a bad situation, Fabio Cerrone from Italy on guitar 1, I worked with him in other situations like Twin Dragons, Great player with a blues jazz rock style and so laid back, he's our Mr cool!! And on guitar 2 my son Joe Harford, shy but a cool young player able to achieve the best of most styles, plays the Sabbath stuff to perfection, and very dedicated, great to have him on board. He has his own band called the Freak Porn Experiment.
Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?
No!!
What is your latest album and why should people buy it?
The title of the new album is Scream. People should buy it cuz they've been telling me to do a solo album for the past 10 years!!!! Now I've done it so go buy it!!!
How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?
It's melodic heavy rock in the Sabbath vein, like the stuff I used to do when I was in the band. I tried to make a move to other musical directions but it was impossible to make it credible. I did many other sessions but that was on the strength of my voice from the Sabbath days.
Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?
Yeah realising it was gonna work!!!
How is the writing process in the band?
I do most of it but have teamed up with Geoff Nicholls on this one because he has some very inspiring ideas.
What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?
My uncle worked for EMI and he gave me a guitar when I was 6 and a Beatles album called Rubber Soul and I sat and learned it all. Apart from being a truck driver and getting a qualification in electronics when I left school, there was nothing really else that I was interested in as a career.
Do you have any idols? If yes, who?
People who can sing without even trying!!!! In my field... Glen Hughes, In other fields.. can't tell you.
Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?
Forbiden. that's the one album that I really don't like listening to. Although the songs were great in rehearsals, the album was produced wrong and It really didn't work for any of us.
Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?
Not really. I would love to be able to do them all again in some version or other.
How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?
VERY!!
What do you think about the state of the music industry today?
Interesting!!!!!! A challenge!! Er... BROKE!!!
What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?
Convince people their dicks will drop off if they do it!!!! ... I don't think there is ONE way to combat music piracy. But I do ask this question to most people that do it. When people go to work in any other job they expect to be paid at the end of the month.. Why shouldn't I? What is it that makes you think that I'm not worth the job I do?....... doesn't stop em from doin it but I love askin the question!!!
Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?
Yep.. It's DO IT NOW!!!! Cuz there aint anything after this life! Make your mark on THIS world!
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
No!!! there aint such a thing! Every day is different!
What do you like to spend your time with besides music?
My lady. And my kids.
What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?
I remembered all the words!
You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)
None of them I'd make my own.
What is your favourite joke?
Can't remember.
Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?
Yep, to keep going!!!!
Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

Comment by Eskil (Anonymous) - Sunday, December 18, 2005 | Tony Martin is a great singer. The Headless Cross album is a masterpiece. Tyr and Cross Purposes were pretty good as well. But he seems to have an image problem. I mean, look at him nowadays!! Like a bad version of Kerry King of Slayer. Totally wrong for the kind of music he´s performing :( |
Comment by Little Drummer Boy (Anonymous) - Wednesday, December 21, 2005 | I like to see a review on his new CD. I picked it a week ago and I have not stopped listening to it. It rocks.
