Other information Band Profile
What is your name and your current position in the band?
My name is Claes Corin. I'm the composer, founder and financeer
of this project. Corin & Edman "Roc de Light"
Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?
I createed all songs between 88-98. One day in 98 I was invited by my friend George Grunwald to come along to L.A, where I have the great honor to meet my "icons" Bill Champlin, Lou Pardini, Joseph Williams, Jason Scheff and also Warren Wiebe. At that moment I decided to start my own recordings. On that flight to L.A I met Håkan Mjørnheim. for the first time, and all my questions concerning production were solved. HÂkan knows a lot of professional musicians, and he presented them for me, one by one. The recording process started in november 98 and ended up in may 06.
Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?
The only reason was to put my piano compositions into an album,
and make complete arrangements of them. There was no economical purposes with this album, only musically. I just want to have my own
CD.
What is your latest album and why should people buy it?
This album Corin & Edman, Roc de Light is my latest, and probably only record. I hope people that want good & balanced music will be able to find C&E.
How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?
AOR, Westcoast piano ballads with a little touch of pop, rock, blues, soul & jazz ( as I said before - in a balanced way). I've no intentions trying to create a different type of music, than this one.
Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?
I can only tell that it was very exciting when the postman was coming with a package , containing a sample of my latest song, (almost finished) from Håkan Mjørnheim..
How is the writing process in the band?
I've created the songs between 88-98. Then I recorded my keyboard part in Mjørnheims studio. Then we talked about different ways to develop the song, and then, Mjørnheim took it there.
What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?
I've always been playing piano in my childhood home. But I'm only a hobby musician. I've studied marketing & economics in University, and been working as a sales manager in different companys since middle 80:s. I'm sad to say, but nowdays I'm not playing piano more than about 30 minutes per week.
Do you have any idols? If yes, who?
Yes, I love David Foster, Jay Graydon, early Toto, Michael McDonald, but also bands like Asia, Deep Purple. I also been listening to advanced jazz-fusion etc.
Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?
I wonder what had happened if I tried to become a professional musician????
Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?
No!
How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?
I must confess! I've nothing to say in a lyrical way when I write a song. It's only a matter of building the song, harmonies, stick, verse & refrain. My "painting" is only a musical thing.
What do you think about the state of the music industry today?
There must be a fair administration of all music. I don't like the pirate down-loading business. You must get paid in a justice way, otherwise composers and artists will stop doing music. Good music will die, perhaps. I know several super talented musicians who are economically poor, but rich in the art of music, But you can't live only on that!
What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?
I guess there must be a legislation with distinct laws and rules concerning the pirate downloading.
Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?
Become serious and honest to people around you.
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
Lots of business and working. I had to finish my day with jogging or have a long walk.
What do you like to spend your time with besides music?
I wish that I could spend some time making new songs, but I've got so much to do in my business-career. I'm allways working, so when the evening or weekend comes, I can not "land" and pick-up the music ( somewhere ) inside me.
What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?
We have never been on tour, unfortunately.
You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)
I'm not so interested in reading books or watching movies.
I think I will chose 3 CDs. Perhaps my own, one with jazz-fusion and perhaps something completely different containing classical music.
What is your favourite joke?
I've forgotten my favourite joke.
Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?
I can only tell you that I'm very satisfied, proud and happy over "Roc de Light" I guess that this one will be the only one from me.
I'm almost "empty" of musical-inspirations at the moment, and had been that for about 1,5 year. But, you'll never know!!
That's why we don't have any plans of making new music, or touring around.
