Events and Reports - Mike Tramp - Live at Skanderborg Festival, Thursday August 7th
Written by Michael

Finally Mike Tramp was about to play a decent Danish festival. Last time was in 1993, when he and Freak Of Nature played Roskilde festival.

Mike Tramp supports his latest album "More to Life than This" and this was only the second show on home ground. I saw the other Danish show about a month ago and this concert was way better. The band played better together at this show. In fact this concert really blew me away.

The compère asked people to get inside the tent, since only around 25 people had found their way. The facial expression of Mike Tramp was a bit strained, when he opened with Falling Down as on last year's tour. Second song If it Ain't Gonna Rock was bit more loose than the studio version. It was obvious that fellow Freak of Nature founder and guitarist Oliver Steffensen now was more familiar with the material. Now he adds his own flavor to the songs with additional licks and in general his playing was freer flowing compared to the gig a month ago.

The new bass player Claus Langeskov is fully incorporated in the band. He sang backing vocals and did a good job. Drummer Kasper Foss is the only member from last years "Recovering the Wasted Years Tour" and as always he proved to be a solid and consistent drummer. Overall they played as a strong tight band

People started to find their way to this explosive rock concert helped by the first White Lion song Livin' on the Edge. Mike Tramp doesn't play the White Lion songs exactly like the originals. However, Livin' on the Edge is pretty close and Oliver smoked on the six-string on this Rock 'n' Roller.

Material from Tramp's solo albums dominated the concert. From "Capricorn" we only got Better Off in an extended version. Off the new album we got the 2 rockers I won't let go and Life for Today. The ballad Nothing at All was introduced as a ballad with hit potential - if only Radio would embrace Rock 'n' Roll again. Mike made a few bitter comments about the music industry today and his own situation. Most I talked to after the show were a bit offended by them. You have to remember that he was once a superstar playing stadiums in the US. I understand why he seems a bit bitter. His newer songs have same high quality as the songs that made him famous.

Even though his solo material is a bit mellower it still has lots of nerve. In concert Tramp and his band still know how to Rock big time. The highlight was the inclusion of the groovy Freak of Nature song What Am I. The song started off with the intro and first verse of 92 and then blasted onto the guitar inferno of What Am I.

The last songs were the huge White Lion hits from "Pride". When the Children Cry was played in the redone version, which Mike recorded for "Remembering White Lion" album. Wait was more true to the original and Oliver did a great job on the demanding solo. The show ended with More to Life than This, which is a full blown rocker. However, climax was reached after the 2 White Lion hits.

As the concert progressed more people found their way to Mike Tramp. As more people showed up, Mike loosened up and got more determined to deliver the best Rock 'n' Roll show. The last 4-5 songs were played to a very enthusiastic audience, who would not let go of Mike after his final song.

Mike Tramp has such a strong back catalogue, since all albums he has participated on are excellent. With 4 White Lion, 3 Freak of Nature and 3 solo albums there is plenty of songs to chose from. Personally I was just hoping that he would play Broken Heart, because the song describes my current feelings quite well, since a cold-hearted tramp recently broke mine.

It must have been obvious to everyone attending the show, that Mike Tramp and band live and breathe Rock 'n' Roll. They used the classic means, 2 guitars, bass and drums to create a very powerful sound. Mike Tramp's vocals are stronger than ever. His tone is deeper and more powerful compared to the White Lion days.

This was the show that photographer Borg and me talked about for the remaining 3 days of the festival. Mike Tramp is the real deal - Genuine Rock 'n' Roll will never die.
