TALISMAN
Sweden stage
Sunday 15.00

This must be the home ground of Swedish rockers Talisman. Their last gig at Sweden Rock was released as a live record, so expectations were high for my Talisman debut. I was looking forward to hear the new songs from their latest amazing album "Cats and Dogs" live.

American native Jeff Scott Soto is an energetic frontman and he was giving himself a 100 percent with a heavy start of the show. The second song played was Color My XTC, which sounded really good, because it was played with passion. Talisman has added Howie Simon to their touring line up and the 2 guitars gave the songs more body live. Unfortunately Talisman played it safe and included the typical up-tempo Talisman tunes from the new album. We got 3 songs and not surprisingly Break it Down sounded best, but also the bass/guitar duel in Outta my Way was fun to watch. Talisman was only on stage for about an hour, so that might explain why they played it safe. I was just hoping for some of the tough mid-tempo tunes like Love will come Again or Friends to strangers instead of the typical Talisman tunes and their otherwise great cover version of Seal's Crazy.

The size of the crowd grew as the concert progressed with songs like Tears in the Sky and the great Mysterious. Jeff made a short break to catch his breath and to wish Jamie Borger happy birthday. He also called his son in Los Angeles to wish him happy birthday and got the crowd to yell happy birthday. Pretty cool birthday call on Soto Junior's 15-year-old birthday.

When hearing Talisman on record there is no doubt that Marcel Jacob and Jeff Scott Soto are the main men. On stage Jeff Scott Soto was the center. He was in a great mood introducing himself as Joey Tempest. I'll Be Waiting was a crowd pleaser and the audience sang along. Maybe that inspired Jeff Scott Soto to include a little sing-along potpourri, where he sang the first lines of songs like Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name and got the crowd to finish it. After doing that, he ended it by making fun of Europe's Final Countdown and then continued I'll Be Waiting.

Along with the musicians in Whitesnake these guys were probably the most skilled. Talisman put on a good show for an hour, which was too short. I had a small chat with Jeff Scott Soto backstage afterwards, but with the compressed program he was in a hurry to go see Y&T on stage. To be honest so was I, and later I also met Howie Simon and Jamie Borger in front of Y&T.

Continue to Y&T and Anthrax...

Comment by Morten (Anonymous) - Monday, October 18, 2004
Hmmm intelligent comment here...

As musicians they do not suck that's one things that for sure. You can discuss weather you like the music or not, but sorry they do not suck.
Also with regards to the music, they deliver a stright ahead no nonsense rock'n'rool party rock, and they do it very well.

So to put it in short, Talisman do not suck, and if you don't like the surf on dude...
