Events and Reports - Masterplan - Dream Evil / Masterplan / Hammerfall live in Copenhagen, Feb 19, 2003
Written by Steen

Dream Evil, Masterplan and Hammerfall played to a full crowd in Pumpehuset, Copenhagen this Wednesday evening.

Anders and I got to the venue 30 minutes before Dream Evil was set to hit the stage. We'd just bought a beer at the downstairs bar when the band started playing, 20 minutes early! When we got into the concert hall the band was halfway through Made of metal That's not one of my favourite songs from Evilized, but the song worked very good live and pretty much embodied the style of Dream Evil. Just playing metal and having fun without being too serious. Overall the band put on a good show, but something was missing to make it really great. Niklas Isfeldt was complaining about his voice after every other song and the band was plagued by sound problems during some songs.

Dream Evil played a good selection of songs from both their albums. The highlight for me was the excellent Children og the night. That ruled. The chosen ones, The prophecy and Chasing the dragon were great too and convinced me to buy their debut album, Dragonslayer. Snowy Shaw was especially excellent behind the drum kit and his drumming kept the music interesting. A special mention also goes to Gus G. who played some brilliant solos. 30 minutes was just too little time to get really into this concert...

Masterplan were next and to say it shortly: They ruled the night. Their performance blew both Hammerfall and Dream Evil away, and left me with high hopes for the future of this powerful band. Masterplan started out with Spirit never die and from then on it got better and better. The whole show was excellent, but the highlight for me was the powerful Kind hearted light.

The whole band had a great stage presence and had a lot of fun during the show. Jorn Lande has a voice of incredible strength. Somehow he sounded just as good, and sometimes even better than on record. I was blown away by his powerful voice. Only two words to say: Fucking brilliant! Roland Grapow played some fantastic guitar and Jan Ectert, on his custom made Pirahna bass was cool too. Other songs I remember were Soulburn, Enlighten me, Crystal night and Heroes If you are able to catch Masterplan live, then I can highly recommend it. They are going to be huge.

Most of the people in the crowd had come to see Hammerfall and when they took the stage people were ready. Hammerfall played an energized set, and it was apparent that they enjoyed themselves on stage. The funniest moment came when the members of Masterplan and Dream Evil joined the band on stage to celebrate Joachim Cans' birthday. I would have liked to hear more songs from their debut, but they did play one of my favourties, Stone Cold, so that was cool. It was also cool to hear Glory to the brave live, with fake snow and everything.

I can't help but mention Oscar Dronjak who obviously has seen some Manowar concerts in the past. It was pretty funny to see him doing his best Joey DeMaio impression and the end of the concert, but in my opinion this is best left for the Kings of Metal themselves, and I couldn't help but smile at this.

Overall it was a great evening of metal in Copenhagen. We got home to sleep and be ready for next day's concert with Within Temptation.

Comments from Anders
For me this concert was only a warm up for next day's concert with Within Temptation. None of the bands were very familiar to me, and I had heard no more than a single album with each of the bands. This also meant that my expectations weren't very high, and I could just hope for some nice surprises.

Steen has already given a thorough description of the concerts, so I will just say a few words about how I experienced the three bands.

Dream Evil was the band I was looking forward to hear the most since both of the guitarists have worked with some of my favorite bands in one way or another. The first guitarist Fredrik Nordström (owner of Studio Fredman in Sweden) has produced albums for bands as In Flames and At the Gates just to name a few - I was looking forward to hear if his guitar play could match his producer skills. The second guitarist Gus G. plays a guest solo on Old Man's Child's new album In Defiance of Existence.

The band delivered an average performance. As Steen mentioned the band had some technical difficulties and the voice of Niklas Isfeldt wasn't too good - besides that the music was pretty cool. Both guitarists played well, and certainly the drummer Snowy Shaw knew what he was doing behind the kit.

The highlights for me were Made of Metal and Children of the Night - they were the only songs giving me the joy of recognition. I agree with Steen that this concert was too short.

Masterplan delivered an awesome show. As with the previous band I only knew very few songs, but Masterplan played with a power and technical finesse that spoke for itself. I especially enjoyed the powerful vocals by Jorn Lande. The band really looked like they were enjoying every second of the show. Throughout most of the concert my eyes were fixed on the blinking fish bass guitar masterfully played by Jan Ectert.

The last and headlining band of the evening Hammerfall were pretty good too. They played what I think must be categorized as old school power metal. At this time I wasn't up in front, so I didn't catch many details. The highlight here was when they played the song Hammerfall - it is always a good sing-along song.

Overall this was a good evening with good metal music. I enjoyed the show even though the bands don't play my preferred genres of metal.
