Mama Kin (Nemis stage)
Michael Monroe and Quireboys gave us the best opening night at Sweden Rock festival ever, so the quality could only decline. However, day two of the festival started with yet another pleasant experience. The new Nemis stage was reserved for up-coming Swedish names and after Mama Kin's great debut album "In the City" the concert was much anticipated.

Mama Kin only got around 25 minutes on stage but enough time to convince and confide in the Swedish band. The band was really tight and their melodic songs got a wide approach. The highlight was watching the guitarist who looked like a dead ringer of Würzel from Motorhead. Bass player Jon played some great bass lines and frontman Ward's vocals held up great in concert.

Mama Kin is about the songs. You Belong to Me was the best song along with Superman. Mama Kin could be the contenders. Watch out for this band.

Nazareth (Festival stage)
Legendary Nazareth had the honor of opening the main festival stage at 1.30 in the afternoon. In 2009 Nazareth released a great comeback album, but they only aired Gathering off "The Newz" and instead focused on a greatest hits set reliving all their huge 70's hits. Dan McCafferty and Pete Agnew looked really old, but they were cozy and this was a lovely afternoon in company with grandfathers. Nazareth seemed in a good mood. The start was strong with Telegram, followed by Turn on your Receiver and the heavy Miss Misery, which put me in a great mood.

Dan McCafferty told everyone that My White Bicycle was dedicated to their days in Amsterdam where they smoked weed. These guys have been around the block and even though Pete Agnew drank a few beers they looked more in the mood for tea and biscuits.

If we let the music do the talking the band sounded great. Guitarist Jimmy Murrison has lit up the band and Hair of the Dog plus Razamanaz still had the glow that made Nazareth one of the biggest bands in the seventies and their back catalogue totally justifies that this was the band to open the main stage. Even though McCafferty didn't move, his trademark vocals sounded great live. Nazareth is solid musical craftsmanship and nice to see people up front (and on stage) with more grey hair than myself.

Y&T (Sweden stage)
Sadly the skies opened right before Y&T was to enter the stage, so opening track Black Tiger should have been renamed Black Cloud. Y&T is almost house band, since it was their third time on Sweden Rock festival since 2003. Dave Meniketti told the crowd that their concert at Sweden Rock 2003 was the rebirth of Y&T.  I agree that the concert in 2003 was magical and they will never surpass that one. The new "Facemelter" songs sounded good live and you got to hand it Dave Meniketti that his vocals and guitar playing is flawless and much like the record.

Y&T was also the first band to pay tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio. The organizers had named a stage after Dio and the most popular t-shirt at the festival was a "R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio".  Y&T played a great version of Rainbow in the Dark with John Nymann playing the signature keyboard riff on guitar. A great fitting tribute for Ronnie James Dio.maybe the sky was crying for Ronnie James Dio, because soon after the rain stopped.

Every time I have seen Y&T I have advertised for songs from "Ten" and "Contagious". Again the only song from those albums was Eyes of A Stranger. I am not questioning the qualities of Mean Streak, Dirty Girl and Open Fire because it is always great to hear those songs. I really enjoyed hearing Rescue Me again since Y&T sounded like a well-oiled machine. Meniketti's voice isn't shot at all despite a career that started back in the seventies.

Pretty Maids (Festival stage)
With only a few days notice Pretty Maids could step in replacing Ratt on the biggest stage at Sweden Rock festival. The Danes grabbed the opportunity and entertained the audience that seemed to have no expectations for Pretty Maids. The first part of the show had focus on the brand new "Pandemonium" album.

Pretty Maids recently changed their bass player to Mr. Hal Patino. It seemed like Patino brought new life to the old band. Surprisingly the band digged out the primitive Queen of Dreams from the "Red Hot and Heavy" album.

Guitarist Ken Hammer seemed a bit shy when the camera men followed him around trying to get good shots during the anthems Back to Back and We Came to Rock. Pretty Maids delivered some good clean family entertainment on a cloudy afternoon. We got singalong in Please Don't Leave Me and Walk Away plus fist-in-the-air metal with Red Hot and Heavy and headbanging in Future World.

Quireboys (acoustic - Rock klassiker)
Quireboys' performance the night before was convincing. The band was to give an acoustic show at the new "Rock Klassiker" tent, which was dedicated to unplugged shows only. Props up to Sweden Rock festival for giving fans a chance to experience two sides of the same band. Quireboys had a huge crowd the night before and it seemed like most of them enjoyed Quireboys and wanted the acoustic experience as well. The tent was jam-packed and lots of people were outside trying to get in.

Again the English gentlemen were in a great mood and entertained us. Quireboys' classic Faces Rock N' Roll worked really well unplugged. The band has just released an acoustic album where they re-recorded their old hits Americana style with mandolin and violin. The band had a "guest star" playing pedal steel guitar but just like a "regular" concert it was Spike leading the party. The acoustic was build around "A Bit of What you Fancy" with a few surprises. It was a true pleasure to hear Devil of a Man and the cover of UFO's Love to Love dedicated to "Uncle Phil" Mogg.

I think everyone loved the show. Fans were also treated with a rarity - Pretty Girls was included on the Japanese version of "A Bit of What You Fancy". The bouncing rocker was perfect in the setting of a cozy tent, ice cold beer and my brandy to keep my throat in good shape for the singalongs. Quireboys got massive response and when Spike got up and asked "What's the Time?" the tent was bouncing and dancing. The band was demanded back for an encore I Don't Love You anymore and bowed out and thanked everyone. The crowd wouldn't let go of Quireboys and stayed there cheering for them. A Quireboys roadie got back in and said "You are lucky because these guys got nowhere else to go". YEAH - The last song was I Love This Dirty Town which was the highlight of the show. The song worked really well acoustic and the atmosphere was just marvelous.

Aerosmith (festival)
Just like 2007 Aerosmith headlined Sweden Rock festival and just like 2007 Aerosmith proved to be a professional well-oiled machine. The band had no new album to support and with all the turmoil regarding Steven Tyler Aerosmith is close to becoming a joke.

The set-list never got the audience united in a big party. Aerosmith chose to play too many covers like Walkin The Dog and the primitive Baby Please Don't Go. Furthermore we also got a drum and guitar solo. The guitar solo was a bit awkward. Joe Perry took the microphone and talked about how cool it was to have their own video game (hence Guitar Hero Aerosmith version).  Joe Perry battled against himself (the big screens showing the Joe Perry Guitar hero version playing some parts) and Joe Perry played his own parts for real. Sorry - the idea was good but it didn't work and Joe Perry didn't seem comfortable with it either.

The highlight of the show was the inclusion of Kings and Queens plus a good version of Dream On. Brad Whitford looked like he was freezing and he looked like a grumpy old man who rather would be in front of the fire in a warm comfortable chair.

The magic is gone in Aerosmith. The toxic twins front the band there isn't any chemistry even though Tyler tried to work the crowd. Aerosmith was billed as headliner but hasn't released a real album since "Just Push Play" from 2001.

I am checking out here and in the future sticking to the records. The setlist underlines a band with many hits behind them, but everything lies in the past regarding Aerosmith.
