Sweden Rock Festival 2010 Day 1

Once again it was time to head to the south eastern Swedish coast. The beautiful settings in the city Norje is once a year transformed into Hard Rock Mecca and this year the organizers had a fantastic line-up for the festival. Even though it marred the pleasure that Ratt canceled only 2 days prior to the festival there was still other great acts to look forward to.

The festival is 4 days of Rock music in abundance. The report will give you a recap what this reviewer managed to capture. Featured reviews day 1:

- Sator
- Michael Monroe
- Quireboys

Sator (Sweden stage)
Usually the first day of the festival, Wednesday, is rather weak, but this year we were spoiled with Michael Monroe, Quireboys and former Accept singer UDO. The Swedish band Sator opened the ball on the Sweden stage. Sator was a pretty big name in Scandinavia in the early 90's best known for their album "Headquake".

There was a good turn-up for Sator. The songs We're Right You're Wrong, I Wanna Go Home and I'd Rather Drink Than Talk from "Headquake" got by far the best response along with their cover version of Gasolin's This is My Life, where singer Kent Norberg stated that this was the only good thing that came out of Denmark.

In 1995 I saw Sator play a big Danish festival and only a few handfuls showed up so their relationship with Denmark might be a bit restrained. The weather was good so it was an enjoyable concert opening Sweden Rock festival. However, Chips Kiesbyes guitar was way too low in the mix and besides the "Headquake" songs Sator only had mediocre material to offer.

Michael Monroe (Sweden stage)
Legendary Hanoi Rocks has disbanded and singer Michael Monroe has assembled a new band carrying his name. The founding stone is Demolition 23, since the first incarnation of the band consisted of 3/5 of Demolition 23. However, there have been a few line-up changes which turned out for the better.

It was really cool to see original Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffa once again teaming up with Monroe flanked by 2 splendid guitarists Ginger (Wildhearts) and Steve Conte (Company of Wolves/New York Dolls).

Michael Monroe is a must see on stage. Michael Monroe is one of the best and most energetic frontmen ever. He performs on adrenaline instead of drugs. The band was super tight and it was such a joy to finally see Sami Yaffa on stage with Monroe. Sami Yaffa has a cool stage presence and walked on stage with a bottle of wine dressed in same red dotted shirt pictured in the booklet on New York Dolls "Cause I Sez So".

The setlist was a mix of Demolition 23 songs, vintage Hanoi Rocks, Monroe solo stuff and even 4 brand new songs. Ginger has taken a vacation from being a frontman and I was a bit surprised how he would react "only" being a guitarist, but props up to Ginger for delivering the goods. He certainly complemented Monroe great on stage and Ginger has also co-written the new songs, so he is a big part of the band. The most melodic of the new songs was Another Night in the Sun, which also got the best response.

The main focus was the Demolition 23 songs. The new songs had a strong punk flavor and therefore the Demolition 23 material sounded very natural for the band. Sadly Monroe overlooked his other splendid solo albums except for "Not Fakin' It".

Michael Monroe is one hellva band and it was a fantastic rock show. Let's hope that they can stick together. Steve Conte on lead guitar played really well, Drummer Karl Rockfist was powerful and Sami Yaffa, Monroe and Ginger are legends. I really look forward to the up-coming album. Hopefully they won't forget the melodies in favor of the fast punk rock tunes.

Quireboys (Dio stage)
Directly after Michael Monroe's convincing show everyone rushed to the Dio stage in time for good time English Rock N' Roll from The Quireboys. The area in front of the Dio stage was jam packed making me think that Quireboys got a renaissance, but again good time Rock N' Roll never goes out of style. The band was in great shape opening with the usual jam started by piano player Ketih Weir and everyone else joining in. The band opened with Don't Bite the Hand that feed Ya from "Bittersweet and Twisted" but otherwise the setlist was much in favor of the debut album "A bit of what you Fancy". From that album we got 10 out of the total 12 songs. Only Long time Comin' and Take me Home were left out from the original album, but Quireboys is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of "A bit of What you Fancy".

Quireboys got lots of well earned support from the huge crowd and they gave back everything to us. Quireboys is not a fashion - it's a way of life when Spike, Griff and Paul Guerin front the band in pin striped suits. From the latest studio album Mona Lisa Smiled and I love this Dirty Town blended in fine with the classic tunes.

This was the second time I saw Quireboys with Damon Williams on bass and Phil Martini behind the kit and they seem to fit in great as a perfect backbone to the "older guys". There were lots of smiles on stage and overall the evening was brilliant. This is what Rock N' Roll is all about - HAVING A GOOD TIME and that's just what we had keeping Rock N' Roll alive with The Quireboys.

To round off the perfect evening I had a chance to go backstage and say hi to the guys who were gentlemen as always.
