Events and Reports - Skanderborg Festival 2008 - Lenny Kravitz live at Skanderborg festival, Denmark August 9. 2008
Written by Michael

The 4-day Skanderborg festival is a festival primarily celebrating Danish and Scandinavian acts. However, in recent years the festival has presented gems like Velvet Revolver, Motorhead, Alice Cooper and Mike Tramp. This year's Rock acts were Nightwish, Lenny Kravitz, Pretty Maids and Eric Clapton.

Yours truly visited the festival 2 days to cover Lenny Kravitz and Eric Clapton.

Lenny Kravitz closed Friday evening. Kravitz walked on stage wearing a winter cap and big sunglasses. In true Rock star fashion he was late and in true rock star fashion Kravitz's management set all kinds of regulations regarding photos meaning RevelationZ Magazine didn't get any photos after being held up at the press tent for more than one hour.

Lenny Kravitz opened with Bring it On from his latest effort "It is time for a Love Revolution" and since no one knew Kravitz had a new album out, it was clear that his old material should bring this concert to a higher level. Kravitz played if safe since next up was a groovy Mama Said followed by Fields of Joy.

T-Rex sang about Children of the Revolution and Kravitz lives it. The concert was marked by retro rock based on 60/70's Rock. Kravitz also lives the Rock N Roll style and he lost his shades when the chosen few photographers left the photo pit. His eyes revealed that it wasn't regular tobacco that was smoked prior to the show.

Kravitz's band was really strong. The loose live versions underlined what a strong band backed Kravitz and since he had such an impressive band it bothered me that Kravitz was always in focus and constantly reminding the audience that this was a Lenny Kravitz show. The only time the brilliant guitarist got a chance to fully shine was on the extended solo on Fields of Joy.

The place was packed by festival attendees, who wanted to get their rocks off. American Woman got the crowd cheering and while the quality of Lenny Kravitz's albums is varying this concert was consistent and focused on the rock side of his material. Besides Fields of Joy the highlight was a brilliant version of Stillness of Heart. Other remarkable songs of the evening were; It Ain't Over Till its over, Fly Away and Dig In.

Kravitz was running so late that I had to miss the two last songs Let Love Rule and Are You Gonna Go My Way, but the concert was a very positive experience. Kravtiz still knows how to Rock in concert and his contributions to Rock history cannot be neglected.
